Pioneer 8X Blu-Ray-- BDR-203

Dave, the pot came today and I have your host/heatsink with driver ready to go for your 8X diode! :)

100 ohm, 4 turn, 1/2 watt pot: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?vendor=0&keywords=3339h-101-nd

The driver is set to 125mA. You can turn it up from there. Using a 100ohm, 4 turn, 1/2 watt pot, it is a nice driver for any current between 12.5mA's and 400mA's... (it can adjust higher, because there is no series resistor in the circuit, but it is only rated for a max of 400mA's)

I know that you don't need this reminder, but it doesn't hurt to mention it... Make sure you discharge the cap before you connect the 8X diode! Because in this circuit, the cap and silicon diode are built-in, instead of at the diode...

Can't wait to see your results with the 405-G-1 glass lens! :D (it will be in the package as well)

I got the voltage measured this afternoon.

The test was done with the Rkcstr and 12V from my 2A bench PSU. Here are the results

100mA = 4.8V
200mA = 5.5V
300mA = 6.0V
350mA = 6.2V

It would appear that the Rkcstr SHOULD HAVE been able to drive the diode with 9V.  Yet it couldn't go above 330mA.   It did with 12V.  I wonder if the length of the test heated something in the driver enough to effect the output?

Next question;  Can the flexdrive supply 6.5V @ 365mA?

Peace,
dave

thanks for testing!

I think what you found is that the rkcstr has a higher dropout voltage than 2.5V in some situations.  Still, the voltage of this diode is high enough to give the FlexDrive a workout.

You should be able to run at 6.0V MAX with the FlexDrive which corresponds to about 300mA with this crazy diode.  Note that this is 0.5V past the 'recommended operating range'. I wonder where the diode's best lifetime operating current is.

Wouldn't THAT be nice to know . . . . . . :-/

Peace,

You just had to put this thread in a section that I barely ever check ::)

Nice work so far! Man, these diodes are looking awesome :D

Is anyone working on a GB for 8x sleds yet ??

Mike

Two different people who do large buys from the Chinese got pictures of the sled from me. I'm sure the Chinese are working at this point trying to see if they can get any of them.

Peace,
dave

Yeah.  I know it's a double post, but I think you will forgive me ;)

After I finished doing the output graph for the diode, it was time to place it into a host.  I had Jayrob build me an MXDL "Chicken Leg" with a DDL driver for my new 8X.  The diode is drawing >6.5V over 350mA so the flexdrive cannot handle it.  I went ahead and paid Jay to make me one of those new lenses he was working on while he was doing stuff for me.

I got the host/driver for it from Jayrob today.  I didn't think I would be able to get to it tonight, but I just couldn't wait    :-[

I set the driver at 365mA.  That is where my test showed the laser put out 400mW after AixiZ acrylic.  I put it together and tested it.  Yep.  400mW after AixiZ acrylic.

So then I put the new lens that Jay made in it. . . . . . . . . . . .

Well . . . . . . . . . . .

Just looky here

8XHalfaWatt.jpg

:o That is >.50 WATT of 405nm light   :o

Will it live? . . . . .Who cares?  I get to see half a watt of violet light shining into the night time sky  8-)

Peace,
dave

They say a picture is worth a thousand words... but I'm sure that a thousand words still cannot explain how awesome that laser is.
Needs a video! :D

Or they are worth half a watt of words... ;D
Wow dave great job.. I have nothing to say but holy sheets !!
Keep up the good work! :)

Again  :o with a lens that could focus the range would incredible. Beyond burning its visibility would be like nothing else.
Amazing is my only comment.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Dave, you ANIMAL!!!

That is unbelievable! :o Over 500mW's! Please post a link to where you got the drive so I can start to compare prices...

About the the 405-G-1 lens mod, you got exactly 28% increase in power over AixiZ acrylic. I got the exact same increase with my Micro Chrome build that you may have seen...

I think I need to change the lens thread to read 28% increase over AixiZ acrylic...

P.S. I know your a power hungry diode torturing wild man, but you should turn the current down to about 275mA's. You would still see over 375mW's with the 405-G-1 lens mod and that set up you have there! Then it would last longer...
