PHR-803T for about $20

I dont understand why we have to tear these drives apart. the diode probably isnt very expensive for these drive maker companies to buy, cant we get in contact with their distributor or something? has anyone tried?

I would bet my own PHR-803T diode that these drives were being sold for less money than what the diode itself cost Toshiba in the first place. These diodes are still really hard to make, and these diodes were really very powerful, not just the least powerful ones they could possibly use as is the case in the PS3 drives. The drives are definitely being sold at a loss, and are probably being sold for less than the value of the diode itself.

Diodes may be small, but don't underestimate how much goes into making a GaN laser diode.

Toshiba bought thousands of these (at least) so they got a much better price than we can get for 100 of them. Often times the manufacturers of these items won't even talk to someone under a certain size order. For example, they will not start up a run before the diodes are ordered and they won't accept an order smaller than a pallet full. We have spoken to many of them. I can get 1-10 for only $800 each.

You have a phone and a computer, right? Maybe you have the magic tongue. I sure don't.

Peace,

damn, should have bought it last night. I just sucked it up and bought a silver one. I dont think were gonna find a new cheap source of these anytime soon, it will probably be like the red open cans where we find a drive about 10$ more like the 115/113 D. Who knows. Im just glad i got mine. Im gonna be mad if some new drive is popped open for like 15$ and they find some fancy stronger diode in the next month lol. ;D

We should have a better idea in the next week. Now that doesn't mean that we won't find another diode or even the same diode being used elsewhere. Just that we will back to searching the wilderness for our next oasis.

Ohh Baby, I started getting scared. I ordered one from Geeks.com on June 10th (After killing the first) and I hadn't recieved a shipment notice yet. It was delivered today to work. I will grab it tomorrow and then I will be back up with a Red, Green and UV. I'm planning on running it on 85ma. I'm taking no chances with this one. Although I am pretty sure I had a solder joint come under to much stress inserting the RCKSTR driver into my module...

Yep (with a little research into what the drive's spec's are). WE were hoping that you would become one of our secret shoppers. Just go out and buy DVD drives. Tear them apart. Put power to the assorted diodes you find. Measure their output on your power meter. Come back and tell everyone what you found

Peace,

Here is what i think about these drives. The PHR head has a few odd quirks that didn't seem right for a reader, the most obvious is the diode power (No mode hop till about 100mW!) , but if you look carefully the diode was made to be directly modulated by the power controller chip.

In addition, is a tilt compensator, and an external read verify photo diode that detects burn success are present. It's definitely a burner head.

Judging by the power of the diode it was for a 2x or early 4x HD-DVD burner.

This also explains the FW revision quirks on the X-box version.

Ordered 2 of them silver ones like 10 mins before your post daquin. Kinda high shipping though. Paid close to a hundred bucks for 2 + shipping... Thanks for the great thread. Hope they arrive soon, just blew my second of three KES400A's :'( Can you say Bleeder Resistor...?

hope i didnt fry the only diode i plucked in an amateuresque fashion >.<

heruursciences has agreed to test it for me so i dont amateurize it further!
Contacted them ;)

Got my first set of two drives from Geeks today...

I ordered 4 total...

Harvested my first 803T diode...

That was single easiest harvest I have ever  done!!!

The housing is a very brittle Powdered metal....took me 30 seconds to harvest a completely pristine Blu Diode!

Placed my Fluke 179 Tru-RMS in Diode check mode..and was awarded with a nice violet glow!!!! ;D

Too Cool!!!!

I was kicking myself for buying 4 drives......now I wish I had bought 10-20~~~~~~

Nice drive...easy harvest.......and a Blu diode that should go to 100 mW...for 17 bucks!!!!!!!

Thanks for the info...I'm one happy Laser Brain!!!!
