PHR-803T for about $20

ok i found merideth - http://www.mi-lasers.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?search=action&keywords=diode_optics

rather pricey. what are my alternatives? is the diode 5mm or 9mm

also i have like 10 CR123A lithium batteries i need to put to good use. ideally, which driver should i be using? I would like to make a little flashlight laser out of this. but the rksctr driver is a little less expensive. the flexdrive site has some glass lenses they offer, are they any good? only $8 extra making my total about $32 or so

forgive my newbie questions :) just new to this

If the Merideth is too much (and it is for many), Your only other alternative is either an empty aiXiz or one of the low powered red laser modules available (aixiz, Sure, Senkat, Sk8ter, etc.). With one of the low powered red units, you will have to knock the existing diode and driver out of the module to use it.

Peace,

One option is to use this host:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4171
Which will take your lithium primaries if you use a 'low range' FlexDrive by DrLava:
http://hacylon.case.edu/ebay/laser_diode/Micro_FlexDrive.php
You can mount the PHR-803T Blu-ray diode into an AixiZ module.
Ths module can be mounted with the 'washer method' shown by Daedal if you want to save money:
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1186966870
His thread there shows a red build and a different driver, but for a blu-ray, you can use the combination that I showed above... ;)
If you want the module mounted really nice and clean in that host, I make heatsinks for those hosts.

For this set up, you will want to use a 1N4001 silicon diode before the FlexDrive in order to drop the supply voltage to 5.5 volts. (FlexDrive max input)

Here's a picture of what I am talking about:

Only this is an open can red build. But the same battery supply/driver combination can be used for a blu-ray build. You just use the 'low range' FlexDrive instead...

i guess its a matter of what i want to make, a flashlight - go with the flexdrive flat.. just a module and try to find casing for it - a rkcstr.. can both be made to power by 1x CR123A battery?

I have not used the rkcstr driver, but I have heard nothing but good about it!

About the FlexDrive, yes, it can use a single 3 volt battery. The supply range for the FlexDrive, is 2.5 volts to 5.5 volts...

it'll be less complicated for me to just use one cr123a cell, along with possibly a more compact host
I was eyeing this bad boy on ebay, it's pretty cheap (!)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=270243611125&Category=16037&_trksid=p3907.m29

and as small as this little guy is, id love to see it made into a laser - it's got a five mode tailcap! wonder if you could get those effects into your laser?

alright I just bought 5 of these bad boys, shipping wasn't bad at all, only $11.

I'll be making some MXDL blu rays soon :)

No, you'll need at least 2.25V higher than the diode voltage for the driver to operate at the intended current (as you go below, the current will decrease). So, you'll need at least 2x CR123A batteries (or >7.2V) to operate the 803T diodes.

Can you do pre-installed units? I don't have a soldering gun at the moment. And if you don't have any extra 803T's, I can have one shipped to you from geeks.com

Thanks,

Well, I've never sold any here, but I did sell a couple extra diodes I had in modules with drivers on Ebay... though I'm sure you wouldn't want to pay the "ebay" price (>$100).

I don't have any extra diodes at the moment, but I was considering buying a few more. I could possibly do it, if you want. I'll send you a PM to discuss it more.

Also, side note... I wouldn't suggest using a soldering gun for this work. They tend to be high wattage and the tips aren't very small, which would make it difficult to use... most likely you'll end up frying a diode.

okl thanks for telling me rckstr aboutthe 1x cr123a not being able to power it (afterthe fact i bought a 1x cr123a flashlight on ebay for $11 wish i had known sooner) :'(

Well since i bought the flashlight can i use a 3.6v RCR123 instead of a 3.0V?

or am i SOL ? if i cant do violet what's the most powerful burning red pointer i could make out of this?

i suppose im stuck with a flashlight now lol

you could get a long open can diode from a 20x dvd burner which would give you about 300mW of 650nm red. Newegg sells the dvd burners for about $25 on sale, or ~$32 not on sale. they sometimes have free shipping sales which helps out a lot.

or you could get a 16x dvd burner closed can diode from [link=http://www.hightechdealz.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=8]me here[/link] or [link=shop.stonetek.org]stonetek here[/link]. we both sell just the diode so you wouldn't have to take apart the dvd burner and get the diode out (which is pretty tricky).

good luck.

You mean will a 3.6V work instead of a 3.0V battery for my driver?

No, the driver requires AT LEAST 2.25V over the diode voltage (do I hear an echo? ;)), which for a red would mean ~5.25V or for violet ~7.25V.

Re: PHR-803T for about $20 Oh Happy Day!

OK, I am a Happy Camper!!!! Since joining this Forum two weeks ago I did the following:

1. Ordered a DX true  30mw Green. It arrived today.
2. Ordered two Aixiz Modules, one with a Sony DVD red diode installed form Stonetek and a spare one for the Blue Ray.
3. Ordered my $18 HD-DVD drive...
4. Took the DVD drive apart getting the Diode Yea!!!
5. Ordered a pair of adjustable Rckstr current drives

Today the current drives and my True Green showed up. A little solder and setting up and.... I now have a Red, Green, and UV laser Woo Hoo.  ;D I need to  mount the red and UV into a host and then I can actually produce the beams in my Avatar.

THis Forum Rocks!!!! As a Side note Dealextreme is freaking dangerous. I also joined candlepowerforums and have a P7 LED and reflector on the way, and some lion batteries and a 50cm RGB LED strip. Are there 12 step programs for this?

I'll post pics tonight of all three beams

Jules

EDIT Some Sadness to report. I was setting up for the beam shots and the UV went away... Dead. Grrr... I checked the driver, it still works. The module was a little hot. I was running the 803 on 90Ma. Now I need to get another one. "Cause I'm kinda addicted right now.

so you can run it in a 1xCR123 flashlight ?
please discuss :) i want a pocket mini micro 80mW purple ray!

ive heard of something called a 'boost circuit' and heruursciences gave me some hope :) maybe my pocket mini micro will become a reality

For a single, 3 volt battery, you will need a boost circuit. Such as the FlexDrive...
