Re: PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please
Well, I was quoting the OP and the way it was presented by Hakzaw when he created this thread. I think the general idea is to say, "Hey, I found this and I'm really interested in it. Unless one of you wants it REALLY bad, I'd like to call dibs." But so far in my experience, in nearly every case on here, it has been worked out amicably and in a way that kept any LPF members from being involved in running the price up.
Also, I think it is assumed that someone calling dibs on something is also doing searches and stumbling across other items that he/she is posting here and not claiming dibs on - so they are saying, "I post a lot of good stuff here, but I actually would like this one myself if you guys don't mind."
Again, I haven't seen any instance where it hasn't been worked out before bidding so that everyone was happy and bidding didn't get out of hand.
It is just a way to alert a group of people that are likely to be interested in something that you are interested too, and to politely ask to be able to get it without bidding against them.
No one is demanding that you don't bid. They are ASKING.
I am unsure as to even what the point is in posting an eBay find in this section if you re going to bid on it. I am secretive if I find a good deal on something, and I plan on bidding.
I think the logic is this... A lot of the stuff you might be interested in is very specific stuff that only a small number of people would be interested in, and a reasonable number of those people might actually be right here!
So by alerting your fellow LPF'ers, you can ask that hey not bud against you or at least get a feel for what they are willing to pay or how badly they want the item.
It isn't perfect, but it gives you a chance to actually communicate with some of the bidders, which is an advantage you do not usually have on eBay.
If you keep it secret, then you do have a chance that no one will bid against you. But there is also the risk that you might be in a bidding war against a friend from LPF who would have been willing to let you have that item without bidding against you.
