N2 lasers have very high peak powers, usually about 100kW. I doubt it's anything FL excited, I can't see where you'd even put one. (metal tube is too small to hold a FL and a rod)

It looks like a gutted gas laser. the big cap in front is too low a voltage for most flashlamps I know of. probably some housing for a very early pulsed gas laser?

Assuming everything is still actually on it and it's just been deactivated, I can't see what else it would be.

no, its pretty clearly missing parts. if nothing else the power junction connector is a hole. the upper portion is clear, implying something was in there to be demonstrated. its not gas tight, and it looks like the back cap connected to something that is no longer present. there are flying leads in the supply as well, though she states that some stuff was disconnected.

I dunno, that support disc in the middle means that whatever was being demonstrated would be rather small. I'm thinking it was clear to show the size of the metal tube. The seller says it was part of a program to miniaturize lasers after all.

Well it's obviously not sealed, even if it was it would have probably already breached just from sitting for 50 years lol. Not sure what you mean by the back cap, do you mean capacitor or cap on the tube?

450V is enough for a medium size flash lamp. Xenon camera flashes are ~300V for example. The lamp operating voltage also depends on the fill pressure. Since this was supposedly an attempt to miniaturize, it would make sense. There is not enough circuitry there to do more than charge/discharge the cap. Discharge it through what? Flash lamp makes the most sense to me. Probably a ruby laser, with the flash lamp and ruby missing, since those parts would have been useful elsewhere.

Where's Steve/LSRFAQ when you need him?

Hmmm true, but still a very high capacitance for a lamp. Usually most lamps use high voltage and very low capacitance, most I've seen are around 40-45mF... But I do see your point...Though camera flashes are generally relatively weak to drive laser rods. I've pumped small YAGs, that way but not likely you can pump a ruby with something like that. They're pretty difficult to lase. I own a vintage portable ruby laser, pretty much the first truly portable one and it's got two very powerful, very high quality xenon flashlamps that take a 2x40mF 2800V bank to run. YAGs have a much shorter pulse lifetime than ruby does though, and are easier to pump, so who knows?

I still love the 7875's and with the high quality lens it's a deal, put 2 side by side and you have a nice leaf burner as these diodes have good energy density as per their divergence, but you all know that. Still with the glass there a bargain.

I agree. I saw my first ruby rod laser in 1965 and it was much larger than the one pictured in the eBay offering. It must be some gas laser and since it was supposedly from the 60s I figured it was most likely a HeNe as there weren't many other gas lasers around at that time. I doubt seriously that the thing ever burned anything at all.

I had some of those sent to me from them when I saw them pop up with that different lens housing on the top. I don't know what projector they are pulling them from but was hoping for a new supply of G-9 lenses. When I got them was a little disappointing as the diodes definitely had some hours on them. The raw output from the diode window was filthy and most I was not able to fully clean up. Then another bummer the lens is glued in there like crazy. Cracked all of them to some degree trying to get them out. When I got them out they wer not a G-9 as on the BenQ pulls. It is a smaller 5mm lens where the G-9/G-1/G-2 is a 6.3mm lenses and would not fit in any of the barrels I have so was not able to do any good testing on them. Sent some off to Angelos to do some testing on.

I would rather have new because like a car mileage matters.

5mw is very low power! will be hard to see dot ,green is beater for a low power laser
