Pay to repair laser with <15 min of use?

That wasn't a cheap laser either - $270 - and it's a fairly new user selling it.

I'm relatively new to this forum myself, and because of this, when I wanted to sell a couple of the extra lasers I had built, I was extra conscious of A) not wanting to overcharge anyone, and B) wanting to be extra-explicit about any potential short-comings of a laser I would be selling - even if I didn't think they would normally have been worth noting.

This seller is even newer to this forum than I - and for that matter he actually mentioned being new to the hobby all together, which wasn't the case for me. So something really cheeses me out to see this guy selling his creations for $270. That rubs me as profiteering - which isn't a "dirty word" per se I suppose - but this guy looks like he really "set up shop" to crank these out for some income. That's totally fine, but if you're acting like a business, then support your buyers like a real business would.

- For someone 2 months into the hobby to be cranking something up to 1.8A and selling it at the price you'd pay for a laser made by one of the vets - it's not cool.

- To make outlandish claims about crazy long run times that are entirely LIKELY to kill your diode, even more not cool.

- To then refuse a REPAIR (let alone a return), even more not cool.

I hate to say this, because I'm shooting myself in the foot (I've got two or three 445s myself that I'd like to sell before I move 4,500km across country in a month), but I don't think you should buy expensive lasers from relatively new entrants into the hobby....

I don't mind the cost so much. But I don't understand why an 80 minute non stop runtime was claimed.

Whenever I make a laser I make sure I test it long enough to decide none of the components will crap out within a few minutes of use. If people are paying good money for something... They deserve a unit that works flawlessly.

When I discuss a Laser sale with a customer I let Them know that I do provide a warranty on the Laser including the Diode if I set it to what I feel is a safe current, however if the customer asks for a current higher than I consider safe the warranty on the Diode is not provided. I even tell Them that if the Diode dies while being set to a higher current They must pay for another Diode to replace the dead one. The duty cycle is also pointed out very clearly, and AFAIK no Diode can be run continuously in the standard hand held host We commonly use for Lasers.

The seller needs to repair this Laser, because He stated in the sales thread a ridiculously long Duty Cycle. People are taking what He said and running with it, and their diodes are going to start dieing when They follow His statement.

that is a lie. You do not LIE to your customers.

I even pm'ed that guy, asking him how on earth he got 20 diodes that all do 1.9-2W at 1.8A, and told him my 2d mag, built by DTR the master himself, at 1.8A only did 1,750mW PEAK at 1.8A. I said, damn son you must have got 20 extremely efficient diodes! And all he could say was I'm sorry yours did not turn out the way you had hoped, or as powerful as mine.

All I could do was laugh, he has under 100 posts here, and DTR is the master, what's wrong with these claims of his?

Exactly. To get a projector with all efficient diodes, you would have to be about the luckiest guy in this hobby.

Whenever I get an efficient diode... I save it for a nice ehgemus host... also I will be using one in my Saik host that I have coming.:drool:

I just laughed at that guy when he pm'ed me telling me all of that.
 
i dont think there should be a warranty on the diode. but i do think that the driver and craftsman ship sould be warrantied. i say ask a reputable member to see if it is ok for you send them your laser and see if they can diagnose it for you. it could be your driver, a poor solder joint explosion or something else.

but let the seller know before hand and work out a deal that if it is poor craftsman ship, that he pays the member that gives the diagnosis.

If the seller was claiming an 80 minute duty cycle, he should be held to that. Though on the other hand, any warranty should be negotiated at time of sale as well. So there are certainly two sides to it.

But. I'd personally have to side with the buyer.. More out of principle than anything else. Both for the outrageous power and duty cycle claims, as well as him selling complete high power lasers to any and everyone.
 
I agree with qumefox 100% in post 24 and and if you want to send me your laser I will have a look at it for free and let you know what is burned out and what is good, I suspect it's just the diode as all diodes in a lot of 24 will not be efficent enough to make claims that they can be run for 80 min at a time @ 1.8 amps.
and if these claims don't stop I would concider that this person either knows not what he is talking about or is just ripping people off here and dosn't care about his customer, I personal feel it's my last choise as I tryed to help this person and he took my advice and never said thanks fuck you or anything in return which leads me to believe he realy dosn't care about any one but him self :tsk:

You can't sell Hi-Power lasers to just anyone with the cash, it's not right and he will end up getting himself in trouble and by association of doing here on LPF that will reflect on the rest of us !

Since he has made such an outragious claim I would even go so far as to call for a ban on him if he dosn't replace the diode :banned:
let him sell his lasers on ebay...

ONE MORE THING It would be a good idea if people would look at a sellers rep or ask around cuz buying from someone like him with not many posts or very little rep is almost asking to get ripped off !

I agree with Jeff on this one, and I hope 20 people didn't just get burned by a LPF member! I am willing to look at any one's Laser if They have doubts as to true output, and workmanship.

Exactly. This guy should not be doing business as he is

And he didn't even try to defend himself I'n our pms, he acted like the claims he were making were true and nothing wrong with his claims

Everybody thinks just because at 1.8A, your going to get 2W with a g-1. that's not true. AT ALL

I just checked the first post of his sales thread, he's got pics of one being metered and claims to have had several metered. This doesn't mean all of them are that powerful, obviously, but it does give some merit to his claims. He shouldn't really state their power without testing all of them, I agree.

I was the one who metered them. There were about 9 lasers and they averaged 1.7-1.9W over 2 minutes. Only 2 lasers had a 1.9W average.
 
Props to Flaminpyro for offering to repair my laser for free! :)

Sparkles (Eric) offered to repair my laser "for free" only if I shipped it to him with a new diode. I told him that something else could be broken, so I asked him for exact price quotes to replace either the diode or driver. He never responded. Awesome customer service!
