Osram PLP520-B1 520nm Green Laser Diode

.....This looks to be a promising diode that's for sure. DPSS 532nm is now at risk at becoming obsolete for a lot of applications, especially when the 1W diodes come down in price. It is so cool to see this unfold!

Yeah, I couldn't have returned to this hobby at a better time I think. Almost makes me want to take another year off just to see what becomes of it when I would return again. Seems like the sky has really become the limit lately. Hopefully more and more common end user products requiring these types of diodes will become more ubiquitous. It would be really nice if all these new technologies would fall to the level of the A140, or even the commonplace 1-5mw red diodes.

This is very nice. I just now have to wait until the price drops :shhh:

Nice work as always DTR! Thank you!

Looks like the divergence is really low despite being multimode. What would you estimate it to be? And what's the initial beam width?

I love this new diode! I just got mine from DTR yesterday and built it into a host today. Thank you DTR for the super fast shipping as always!!

Very nice. What current did you go with and what are you getting out of it?

(Gets a pen and pad) was just going to ask

Hmm this is weird. I set it to 500mA and got 186mW with a G2 lens earlier today. I just tried it now and got 300mW. I wonder if my meter is acting up. I'll have to mess with it tomorrow to see what's going on.

What driver are you using? Could be a driver issue.

These have a forward voltage that does not leave many options. X-boost and microboost(which can boost that high) are the best options I can think of using a single Li-ion.

@ 7V a linear driver with 1-1.5V dropout with 2XLi-Ions may run in regulation for a fraction of their capacity if at all with a full charge so you would need 3XLi-ions leaving you with a massive heat issue to deal with.

With a buck driver that say has a 0.5V-1V dropout and two Li-ions you would get maybe 1/3 the capacity but with most bucks you could do 3XLi-ions and again it will have some heat issues that would require sinking to keep a reasonable duty cycle. Even if you did want to go the 3XLi-ion route there are not that many hosts out there that work with that combination of cells anyway.

300mW? SWEET! I think I will run mine about 250mW though. Thanks for the testing, DTR!

:eg: That's a heck of a laser diode! I will be considering getting that little Gallium-Nitride devil! :D

On a side note, the price drop of a 50mW 520nm laser diode's pretty quick (when I bought the module from DTR, it was $85, now it's $70)...

I'd like to see how these do when cooled. Would be neat to put this in a cooled module to see if I can get <515nm

Possibly pretty well, providing the diode doesn't have any kink issues. The cooler the diode is, the harder you can push, the same can be said for Luminus Devices SST-50 / 90 (I have SST-50 LED, BTW, and I am actually impressed by that LED).

Did the temperature tuning experiment with my 520nm laser, by shoving the laser (with battery removed) into the freezer for a couple minutes until it's quite cold.

The result: Not so much difference, even though I did see slightly blue-shift, probably around 516 nm. Probably we may have spectacular difference in multimode diodes due to the nature of multi-layer PIN diode construction.

The blue shift isn't incredibly high, from what I've seen.

So now the goal is to get an already low diode, <515, and then take it to -60C.

One of these diodes that went through my hands was 514, even compared it to my Ar.

True. I wondered why it's easy to obtain blue-shift from Infrared laser diode (as far as DPSS setup is concerned).
