NJG-18, multimode boost driver for 445nm.. and possibly 650nm

AFAIK he made the 1st LED drop-in module for minimag.

I still have some madmax and badboy bought 6-7 years ago...
These fit for minimag - 14500(AA) size
I think these two are not suitable for 1W+ 445nm with single Li-ion.

I don't have any idea of recently designed drivers.

yea you are right, the badboy and madmax both cant be used but im currently using the new badboy nexgen set at 1000mA well 990mA to be exact. i wish i had an lpm to measure the output but it is going through an aixiz 445 glass lens.
im sure to be very close to if not at 1W of output

Anecdotal evidence here -
I'm using this driver in a single 16340 setup (pocket mini chrome). I'm fairly certain I was getting ~1000mA out of it. I'll double check this weekend, or when my LPM arrives - but I'm pretty sure I came to the conclusion that it was providing a full 1A before I decided to fasten it in there for good.

If anyone was wondering I have tried running two of these in parallel set to 900mA each and as far as I can tell it does not work. The combined output was actually less than the total output for a single one. If you have info that contradicts this please let me know. I did have them set bypassing the negative side by just running the negative driver output to the negative pin and the case pin to bypass the modes and not using the driver negative input.:)

I tried the same - including with the use of balancing resistors. Wasn't able to see any appreciable difference at all.

I think this is potentially due to the batteries themselves being the limiting factor. IE, at 3A current draw by these drivers on their own, could a parallel build really draw any more than that from a single cell?

Certainly. I was actually testing on my 5A power supply and some of the 18650's, all of the 26650's and 32650's can handle 5A no problem.:)

Good News for red!

I built a SOC-NJG18 with one 1N4001 today. Success!
After soldering 1N4001 to NJG18, I set the current about 300mA at high.
I soldered to SOC.

With my LPM, I set the pot again to raise the power until 200mW.

Awesome! It's a multimode red!

I must order some LOCs...

I used the "rkcstr" standard test load at this time.(4x 1N4001, 1ohm)

Your trial of LOC, gave me a hint for using 1N4001 for voltage-drop.
Previously I didn't have a plan for the red, because I thought there would be a insulation problem between a case(-) red LD and a host.

Yesterday I found some SOCs at old drawers that I extracted from SF-AW210 sleds. I tried a SOC-NJG18.

Yellow tape around Aixiz is for the insulation.

The "Red" diode should need ~ 3 VDC.

The 1N4001 should add about 0.7VDC.

The total is ~ 3.7 VDC.

With most boost drivers, the voltage from lithium batteries may be higher . . .

and provide no regulation.

Be careful when using this setup.

I have tried two of SOC-NJG18 with 2x 1N4001 and with 1x 1N4001, with fingers crossed.
2x-diode-one was failed.

According to DTR's link(#98):

I think:

driver's minimum output with 4.2V Li-ion --- 3.8V (after load and Schottky diode on driver)

And

Vf of SOC at 300-350mA --- 3.1-3.2V
Vdrop of 1N4001 at 300-400mA --- 0.8V

Please correct me if I know this wrong. ( I'm a pure amateur. Way from electronics.):yh:

I challenged.... because I thought it was possible and somewhat safe.
I think laser DIY is a nice hobby but more or less a trial-and-error to me.
Next time I will try LOCs with 1x and 2x 1N4001. And with 1.5VDC, 3VDC and a Li-ion.

I have tested many Red LD's.

Some have lower voltages than others (I've seen 2.8 VDC at 300ma).

In most cases, one diode drop will be OK.

oh awsome rhd good looking out. i have failed twice on getting these drivers from dealextreme. and they still havent given me a refund. this is great. im gonna order a buttload of these guys just to have... :na: jk i'll save some for everyone else.
 
I just ordered two of them, as well! Should be fun, I should be having an LOC coming in. What's the Vf on an LOC at 400mA? And what kind of current draw am I looking at for the LOC + 1N4001 from the batteries? The reason I ask is because I may put it in a hotlight kit, but I may have to use three 14000s.
