Slashdot Your Rights Online Story | Anti-Piracy Windows 7 Update Phones Home Quarterly

Lauren Weinstein's Blog: Who Owns Your PC? New Anti-Piracy Windows 7 Update "Phones Home" to Microsoft Every 90 Days

Windows Activation Technologies Update for Windows 7 - Genuine Windows Blog - The Windows Blog

Personally i do see this as an Invasion of privacy, because they will be seing some data.. anyway... for those who are using NON-GENUINE windows 7 this is an alert..

Mines genuine... Though if the update is optional, what good is it going to do? Ones with a pirated version will simply choose not to install the update.
Sounds like it would be better for the ones that download windows and are too stupid to know if it's genuine or not lol!

I could be reading something wrong though.

I can see both sides of that coin.

There is always a workaround.

Heck, I had one machine that I reformatted and reinstalled every couple of months, just so I could keep using trial versions of software without going "legit"

Just like everything before, it might help for a while, then it'll be cracked, or people will find a workaround, etc.

I just read a bunch of Posts.... and this one sums it up quite
eloquently.....

Yeah, because it seems perfectly reasonable for my OS to require me to
call the developer periodically in order to remain functional.

I'm shocked the contractor who built my house doesn't periodically change
the keys to the front door so that I can validate every 6 months that I do,
in fact, still own the house.

Or that my car doesn't connect electronically every few months to make
sure I still have the manufacturer's permission to drive it.

Why would anyone have a problem with this sort of thing? As long as any
malfunction can probably be fixed with a phone call, I don't see how anything
could possibly go wrong.

There is a reason I still use WIN 2000 PRO.....

Just turn off automatic updates..

Or

Just read the updates that are about to be installed. then just skip the WGA ones.

My XP is running just fine

I think anti piracy is a joke. IMO the ones making that are making the anti piracy software .. are the same ones who make the hacks to disable or remove the software. (Just like Steam Games)

Have you tryed windows Xp, its much more fast and more stable.

Microsoft will never succeed lol.
Mac fan? laughin' hard. :D

I have tested almost all versions of windows since 3.1 and so far the one i like the best was XP. I'm almost gonna revert from 7 to xp.

No, I hate macs. I'm using WIndows 7 right now. I just know they will never stop pirates.

And FYI, 7 = more stable than XP.
