Looking for new soldering iron, suggestions?

I use the 15W grounded from Radio Shack... Works great :) Not to much to burn things and just enough to make sub second solder joints...
-Shane

60/40 Rosin Core .050

I had thought of this iron used with the Weller station
Weller WLC100 40-Watt Soldering Station for Hobbyist and DIYer-WLC100 at The Home Depot

In the pics it shows the station having a grounded outlet for the iron but the iron has a strait plug.
As the cost was about the same I went with this one.
60 Watt Soldering Station from Circuit Specialists

Ill check into the radio shack one but I think fr the libk norbyx gave and talking to hak, I found what I need. Feel free to continue the soldering talk though. I feel like no one talks about aoldering and its a fairly important topic when it comes to lasers

^^^
these three are for parts or repair. more than 300 hits on 'weller soldering gun'
tolya they sold a boatload of these..
both the ones I have work fine- and Ok for some applications but not so much for working with laser diodes.

I just found mine & its a 8200 N- not grounded plug..

here is one at Feebay

if so that's a spare heating element:beer:

FWIW, if you're looking for a simple, quality pen, I'm a huge fan of my Weller WM120. It's more of a soldering pencil, as it's super small. Only 12 watts, and ultra thin tip make it great for laser work.

So add me to the weller ws51 club. I got $3 overnight shipping :san:
Its built like a tank, and tips galore! (maybe ill pass it down someday)

Ill post some more about when I get it.

Congrats Bacon! I still adore my WES51!

My only concern about the "Circuit Specialist" and other brand (that I've never heard of) is availability of replacement tips.

I KNOW I can walk into any hardware store, should I need to, and get a replacement tip for mine. I won't have to wait for Chinese holidays, shipping, finding tips to begin with, etc...Maybe this isn't really an issue, but it certainly is one reason why I chose my Weller.

Indeed that is an issue with many brands of soldering stations. I have a very nice radioshack one (who makes them I have no idea) and I need to change the tip, so far I had no luck getting one that will fit. I don't want to change the soldering station because it works very well and it would just be a waste of money. I need to search more. But weller tips I could find anywhere.

If you can find a used Metcal under $100 GET IT. For many years I thought of the Temp' controlled Weller and Hako units as ridiculously overpriced for the jobs I needed to do. Then I worked at a company that had Metcal stations. Two weeks later I plopped down $700 for a Metcal of my own. Worth. Every. Penny.

I bought a WESD51 from amazon a few weeks back. I went to use it for the second time today and the temperature went out of control. The iron was literally glowing cherry red. I turned it off, but it's now dead. Thankfully Amazon is really good about replacing things, so there is a new one one the way already.

Hoping this one at least outlasts the other one. :(

Ohh you fancy pants you got the digital huh..
Just tried out my "analog" dial WES51 today and it cut though that really tough solder like butter around 750. I love it so much!

Good pick going with amazon, I purchased directly though amazon just in case.
If that happened to me, I might pop a vein in my brain!

The thing that made me decide on the Weller was someone I know, testifying that they got roughly 200 ft of solder on each tip without replacing!

That as compared to maybe a couple of feet w/ a cheap soldering iron from RS...

So far, I've run roughly 50-60 ft of solder with my original tip, and it just now seems to be showing any wear at all...solder on the side of the tip, rather the very end...

Eudamonium and I have this solder station AOYEU 936. It was the cheapest station with temperature control. You get a spare heating ceramic but I am still using the first one.
It has never failed on me.

This it's a Soldering iron which ranges in power from 5-40W, and a 1.5mm Pointed Tip, oh and it comes with a holding station for it which comes in handy.
