Exactly if your going to use a flexdrive you CANNOT use rechargable cr123's. You have to use primary lithiums and the diode to drop the voltage down to below 5.5v as rckstr has said. The max voltage you can run the flexdrive with is 5.5v. If you use rechargable cr123's then fresh off the charger your voltage is going to be upwards of 8v and one single diode is not going to drop the voltage to below 5.5v. The flexdrive is best used with the 18650. You CAN use a rechargable there.
So here's your options.
Flexdrive: 2 lithium cr123's (diode inline), 1 cr123 (lithium or rechargable) 1 dummy battery, 1 18650 rechargable (only option I know of for the 18650)
Groove drive: 2 lithium cr123's, or 2 cr123 rechargables.
