Kenometer/LaserBee PRO Mods...

Ken I hope you DON'T make the V1.3 PRO Firmware available as a d/l, that would be just too darn easy to reverse engineer it. Yes I know with the right knowledge skills and tools it can be plucked out of the Meter, but no sense hand it over on a silver platter.

If it is going to be free upgrade it should only be for the Original registered owner, warranty and service generally are not offered beyond the original owner.

Like the Andover Holography and other devices; you must ship it back to the manufacture to have the firmware upgraded and it's always not a free service.

The code itself is not exactly impossible to recreate - plus, you'd only really be able to get Assembly-level code out. With the same effort it would take to disassemble the code, and modify it in Assembly to remove copywrite notices, the programmer may as well have legitimately re-written the firmware for themselves instead. I've actually seen open-source firmwares to run on Arduinos that make them function as data-logging oscilloscopes using similar LCDs - it would be much simpler to modify the freely-available code to fit the purpose instead. There seems little point in making the process more complicated for the user, when the code is not highly sensitive. The only thing that providing the firmware as a download does, is make it easier to "burn" replicas of the meter for oneself, but even then, with a bit of code on the chip that inspects existing code before allowing the firmware to be upgraded, this can be avoided or minimised (or, the firmware updates handled via bootloader that only replaces select regions, and so only makes the modified parts of the firmware available to download). With a bit of effort and coding, firmware updates can be securely delivered without making replication easy.

Just thought I would post this exchange for the sweet irony of it.

I knew it, I knew it!
I'm gonna rub this in professors' face all day long after the presentation of the project.

Thank you Jerry!

If you want to make a positive impact with your professors...
I would suggest you simply show the modifications that you
made to the original drawings...;)

lol I don't know the definition of plagiarism? I know that this right here is defiantly plagiarism. If anybody else did this they would be getting ripped like no tomorrow.

I've lost all respect for Jerry and his laserbee products during this little episode. And I'm kind of disappointed that more members here are not angry. This is obviously a mix of plagiarism and bashing all rolled into one, this thread serves no purpose other than that.

Lastly, if there was no problem with calling it a laserbee meter then why did you find it necessary to change the post?

Thanks for the retaliation rep anyway!

Edit: Look here, I have "improved" Daedal's driver. I call it the Pontidriver!!

better.jpg

Of course I can call it my own, It took a lot of work to make it look better! It still functions completely the same, but I somehow reversed engineered it and now its mine!

Daedal's driver is just an implementation of a reference design, made over 15 years ago by an engineer working at National. It isn't "Daedal's" driver in that sense - but he introduced and popularised it on here, so we call it "Daedal's" for ease. In that specific example your analogy isn't correct.

Regardless of whether or not you disagree, Jerry does not seem to be profiting from this meter in any way, and has never claimed that the original work was his - so it isn't strictly plagiarism, either. Whilst I agree it would have been nice to see details of the mods, he hasn't done anything illegal here - morally ("bashing") is another separate, grey issue and will vary from member to member, so that's a different argument altogether. If he'd shared details of the improvements, I could have seen more point to the thread, though he has gone some way to doing this (braiding as explained above).

I'm still waiting for a response from MarioMaster to my post #31 above...
(either here or in PM...)
Once my query is answered I will respond to all the issues some members
seem to have with this Thread...

Yes, the upgrade is free for all owners of a Kenometer Pro, however they must mail their meter to either me or Kenom for the firmware upgrade.

Good call, you don't want people "reverse engineering" your work and selling it.

I'm sure Jerry will find some way to complain about not posting all of your work making it even easier for him to rip it off...

Why do you keep talking out of your A$$... like a 9 year old...

@ MarioMaster.... since I have an Arduinio with a Socketed Atmega328P
could I send back the MCU to have it updated....

Why do you feel the need to claim someones work as your own?

Wow, you redid some cables and made them look pretty. Then you put a cell phone directly on top of the meter and it still worked! That's EPIC! I know I love to talk on my cell phone directly on top of the meter while checking my lasers.

You have done nothing here that a 9 year old could not do on his own, the only thing you are trying to do is try to compare your crappy little meters to the Kenometer and you are failing miserably IMO. Give it up already...

If I was mariomaster, I would refuse to touch that meter, you have clearly voided the warranty about 1200 times over.

I really am honestly intrigued as to what your intentions were with this thread.

-> If you wanted to help Kenom with design, you would have PM'ed him.
-> If you wanted to help the community, you would have posted what you did.

Whose interests does this thread serve other than yours?

The reason he didn't post what was done is because he doesn't know what was done, he probably had someone else do all the work to this meter for him.

Thanks for summing up this whole thread Trevor, the number of threads Jerry has opened complaining about the Kenomer or someone related to the Kenomer is getting ridiculous. He is coming off like a ass trying to make the Kenometer or the people behind the Kenometer look like crap. If he was a real businessman, he would just redevelop his OWN meter so that it would be better than the Kenometer, but instead he just slings mud, like a politician.

your crappy little meters

While I don't agree with the laserbee enclosure or really understand why yet, I think your out of line saying the laserbee meter's are "crap." They're good meters, they work well with exceptional build quality. Just because you have an issue with an owners actions, it doesn't effect the product they produce and doesn't really give you the right to slag off the hard work that went into them, I would say the same about the Kenometer had it been called crap.

What do you think this whole thread is about? Its about Jerry "fixing" the one meter that Ken sent out that was a little messy that Ken offered to fix it but CDBeam refused. Jerry is trying to defend his meter now that it is second rate compared to the Kenomter.

They both have a great product if only we could put them all in a room with all their tools to make one Amazing meter.
They are at separate levels of quality one has software and other is hardware, But for a truly amazing product they must work together to have the best of both worlds.
