In regard to what Bob said.
You have 60W meters!!? All I remember seeing is 20w. My god that's insane.

Bob, I think you might be mistaken as astralist highest power LPM is an uncoated TEC that measures up to 20 watts. Have you got something that puts out that kind of power to measure? Or just 20 watts? I've read all of astralists specs on all meters offered and I haven't seen a 60 watt yet. My Scientech Calorimeter reads up to 10 watts and it weighs 1.5 lbs. That is just the sensor. If I am wrong, I apologise, but it would be something he has not actually advertised.

I've been wanting a large capacity LPM for some time now so when Astralist made the offer I couldn't turn it down. Will be doing a review on it probably in a month or so. But, Yea she a beauty. :)

It was a special build by Astralist. It uses a Ophir 150c-a-1-ax head that can read up to 150 watts, but the max his meter can read is 60 watts which is plenty for me. Finally got one, been searching eBay for months for one that included data logging, that wasn't over my price range. Very happy with it. Like I said I'll do a review when I can next month. :)

Interesting. Did you buy the sensor new, or is a used one off eBay? Was wondering about the calibration of the sensor. They do need to be recalibrated every so often. Also, a sensor made to measure 150 watts could have a real problem reading powers as low as 5 watts. I'm not sure about this particular sensor, so I don't really know.

No it was a completed unit by Astralist. It was a slightly used by Astralist himself so practically new.
Astralist says it has a plus or minus of 5% from his other Ophir's so hopefully the calibration will last a bit before I need to recalibrate. Keeping it in a clean/dry place so?? :thinking:

Edit; that's a good idea. I have Astralist's 6 watt LPM also I can compare the two at lower output units. I'll incorporate that into my review.:thanks:

Okay. So astralist made this up for you special. If it is within 5% of his Ophir and the Ophir in +/- 3%, it could be better or worse depending on the wavelength. I believe most of these were calibrated at 1064nm. Ah, I'm sure it's fine for a hobbyist LPM and the power rating is exceptional for these lasers. If you don't mind, could you let me know what it set you back? Might want to do the same with him if it wasn't too much.

That sensor i get from my supplier in Israel (the country origin of Ophir)
It is a new sensor, i tested it has about <5% differs from each other of its kind (with same calibration wavelength) which is acceptable considering their max tolerance of ±4% from NIST. let say one sensor has -4% while the other has +4% from NIST, that would be max of 8% difference from each other.
Altough it does have slight over value if compared with 1064nm-calibrated sensor like Ophir 20C-A-1-Y, which is normal because of different calibration wavelength.

The only problem is only about the minimum power it can read, which is about 60mW.
Power greater than that would be linearly calibrated.

About the calibration, as long as you don't spoil the surface AND running it continuously for hours of use every time it turned on, i assure you that the calibration will be okay until MTBF (until total ON hours is equal ~8000 Hours)

For your information, recalibrating the meter on NIST costs $5000 while recalibrating on Ophir (or its subsidiary/supplier company) costs about ~$400

I've been doing this special order to some people here including BobMc.
One of the reason i don't advertise this kind of monster LPM is because of scarcity of the thermopile head which the availability is pretty much unpredictable.
Another reason is because some people doesn't accept DIY works like this (without professional looking metal casing and such) for such premium sensor with premium cost, even though i only charge the datalogger board for only $99.

There is other who buy the head themselves and then buy my Hyperion Board with custom calibration, provided they know the output of thermopile head they bought.
 
Let me know by PM if and when you have something that wouldn't exceed 30 watts. I don't want to start a collection of LPMs, but I do like the way yours seems to work. Thanks. :beer:
 
I've seen the systems by Astralist, and they don't look DIY at all.

The PCB and component mounting on them is of very good quality, basically as good as you get get with wave and reflow soldering for anything. The only thing looking hand soldered to me is the interconnect between main board and display, but if it is hand soldered they did a -really- good job on that too.
 
Hey I got the LPM in today! :D
I've got to be honest, I've never had one before so I'm so scared to touch it the wrong way, I have never fried a diode from ESD and hoping to make sure I don't with this, of course I know never to touch the sensor at all costs.

Don't forget to put some type of insulation under
the raw PCB to not have any metal objects short
out the PCB when under power.
