Howto: USB Soundcard DAC (EZAudDAC) with Windows 7

If you've got install media and a key for XP and install media for Windows 7 it isn't very hard at all in most cases, but you will need either a hard drive with multiple partitions or 2 hard drives. It's not good to put 2 Windows installations on the same partition.

You have to install XP first then Win7. First you would install XP to an empty partition or new drive, and then you'll have to do a startup repair for Windows 7 using the Win7 install disk.

Another option is to use any old XP computer or laptop you might have laying around for your laser shows.. the soundcard DAC software doesn't require much computing power or RAM. I don't know if you're like me and have old computers around, but if you do this is a good option.

And yes, the option of buying a new DAC is always there.... but i have a feeling if you could do that you would have already ;).

.

i could of bought one if my phone didnt get run over :yabbmad::yabbmad:

i got vmware set up with some help from someone on laser chat :D

so hopefully this will be working now :p

Let us know! I'd be curious to see if your VM install can run shows smoothly or not.. but that will depend on what software you're using. LFI and HE Laserscan require very little in the way of computing power whereas Spaghetti needs a little computing power and a decent amount of memory. Not sure about LSX.. Spaghetti is sort of the exception when it comes to hardware requirements for soundcard DAC-compatible software.

Believe me I know the feeling.. been there done that MANY times over. Look at it this way: The more you understand about DACs and laser projector control/connectivity, the easier this whole game gets on every level. It's the same with building the laser sources yourself, whether you're just using diodes or making your own DPSS. That's one of a few benefits of DIY over "buy it now"...

I had my son-in-law (MS in computers) look at this today. We are fighting a loosing battle. He suggested two hard drives --- some revs of Win7 won't start in 32 bit ---- the vertual xp is crap unto itself etc etc............
DOOM I SAY :-(
I'm now down to my old laptop in XP. I got the DAC driver loaded but I can't run BB's 7.1_Max because of a "codex" error. WTF is that?

thats no good i didnt have time today but im going to try it in vmware if it works ill let you know if not i will just set up a duel boot and if it works i can help you set it up as well

My son-in-law is a programmer for a company selling software. They do not support Win 7 yet because so few have it or want it. I think a dual boot will confound the computer since the real and virtual modes don't recognize each other.

NOW: I've seen that "codec" error on my other stuff but Win 7 will ignore and run BB's 7.1_Max adjustment program. How do I get MAX to run in the media player under XP? I have expanded the zipped file and it won't run.

Well the file is just a multi-channel wave file. It technically shouldn't need any special codecs. However, some media players can't play audio with more than just two channels. You can try using Audacity or Foobar2000 (my preferred music player software).

BB -- Thanks again. I still can't +rep you......
I want to get something running because I have an iShow coming
for a beginner starting point.
HMike

PS: My computer guy may try to remove this Win 7 and install XP on this new computer I got.

I got my iShow today. Box, cables and a disk -- no more. It all looks good but I can't get any of my other stuff running.
Should there be another thread started for iShow? I'm overcome with info....

HMike

Also when I try to load the cmedia file from here into my two XP computers, I get this:
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" WTF is code 39 ??? This driver software works on 2 channels in Win 7
on my new machine.

Hemlock_Mike, see if you have a good version of the C-Media drivers for WinXP. According to this (none of the external links work from that thread) there is a bad version of the driver that doesn't work well.

You can try other CM106 type drivers (search for that specifically) such as this and see if it works.

BB --- Thanks for your help and Happy New Year to all.
I got the iShow running on my OLD Dell laptop last night!
The fun begins!
HMike

1/2/12 -- I got my DAC/Amp built up into a box. Now if I can get my old XP units to
go 7.1 :-(

The iShow unit works with both old XP computers. I'm still trying to figure how to
make a show!
