Thanks Chris --

I am guessing the letters are initials of the test person. Also, it seemes to me that the higher the number, the more power. I may be wrong. All I have tested so far are ~808 or deeper IR.

I found that these 9mm diodes are VERY easy to de-can. If you simply use some snips and pinch them the cans literally pop right off :D It almost even looks as if they're press fit on there :o

Hi

got my diodes today great little things have  so far 1 diode was not working all the rest was  ;D and have a 3 watt to . my psu is great for running the diodes .
I dont have a power meter but all the diodes i got are ir diodes and all run at around 2.5 to 2.8 volts drawing 1.2 to 2 amps I may buy a FAC  lense to make a small burning laser

thanks for the diodes chris :)

good to know.. I'll have to try it when I get home.

I don't know... it looks like they were all done by one person, except for 3 of the 4 in the "KY" series.

@ HumanSymphony & ElektroFreak
Why would you want to de-can them?  :-?

^decanning allows for more power output as well as gives us the ability to place the diode die directly next to whatever type of crystal we might want to pump. Placing the diode as close to the crystal as possible (without touching) eliminates the need for complex pump-correction optics in many cases, and allows the crystal to absorb the maximum amount of the diodes output..

The numbers are simply the serial number and the letters are the tester's initials.

BTW, you can decan an 808 and put a DPM ripped from a cheap Chinese green laser pointer on the heatsink that holds the diode with a tiny amount of thermal epoxy, and you got yourself a nice all in 1 green laser that will put out up to 250 to 300mW! If you have an oldschool dpss laser pointer with a discrete crystal stack you can get power levels of over 500mW with one 2 watter!

Ahhh... OK. It makes more sense now. Thank you for the explanation.

Can anything be deduced by looking at the inside of the diode? Maybe power or wavelength?

Is it terribly obvious I'm a NooB who doesn't have a clue? ::)

Looks like a 2W maybe more (pulsed), the fact it has several bond wires on both sides may indicate it may be a 980 or 904 4W pulsed or 2W CW ???nm, OR an 808 2W.

Either way if it works your grab bag is paid in full by that diode alone, many times over :D

Thank you for the input (and the diodes ;) ) I really hope that is one of the working ones. I can't wait to start testing. I ordered my protective specs today from OEM and have a few V4 drives on their way.

hi

i tested all the diodes i have all are ir or nir diodes and i run them at 2.50 voltas and they draw 1.5-1.7 amps .

I just made a burner from a 20mm tec and a small block of aluminium and a camera lense to focuse the light is it ok to run the diode at 2 amps at 2.5 -2.7 volts ans this is what the diode is drawing

thanks

I received my order from Chris late yesterday. Shipping was very quick, the order was very well packed and padded against any damage.

C-mount GB - 20 diodes received. 2 diodes are red !!! The rest are near IR. One diode was received with a broken flaplead but still emits and can be repaired. 20 out of 20 good !!!

25 Assorted LD's - The bag had 29 9mm diodes in it !!! 25 diodes work perfectly, all are IR emitters, no reds.
So, 25 out of 25 good !!!

Surprise Box - A rich assortment of electrical and mechanical goodies, including keyswitch, pushbutton switches, rotary selector switches, cooling fans, CPU heatsinks, laptop memory, 2 x TO-3 laser diode with collimator assembly, some random optics, a sled with no diodes, 2 red laser pointers, a led flashlight host, a solar cell with nicad assembly attached, a PSU for hene laser, a gearhead motor, some random circuit boards,
zener diodes, clip leads, a microwave oven capacitor, some electromechanical gizmos, some optics.

Any e-mails or PM's sent to Chris were replied to nearly immediately and overall this was a great deal and an excellent way to stock up on laser stuff.

In conclusion, I have ordered again.

Thanks, Chris !!! Excellent service and a bunch of freebies thrown in !!!

noob question warning!

I got a package of diodes and surprise electronics kit.

Part of the stuff included is in the pic.

Got a couple questions. *

1. how do I set up a circuit to test the 9mm diodes when I don't know the pin config or power or anything about the diode? I saw a breadboard on one of the posts in this thread, but couldn't find any other info after doing several searches.

I've got basic electronics skillls and I'm licensed for low voltage, but this is out of my area.

BTW, one is labeled 655mw 1w weak.

I also received my grab bags today (will get a surprise box next time probably, although not for awhile) - shipping was fast, the diodes were well packaged, and all went well.

It will probably be awhile before I can test these, but I will try and remember to post the results when I do.

Anyways, I had a thought:
as everyone tests their diodes, could you post a list (time and interest permitting, of course) the diode type (9mm cmount, etc.), the power/output it began to lase at, and (your best guess) for the maximum 'safe' power of the diode?

For example, I am new to this hobby, and did not know (until told) that a way to distinguish the .5W 9mm from the 1W 9mm was that the 1Ws will begin to lase at about 300 mW and the .5s will begin sooner.

If we can compile a table of the most common diodes (in this particular diode lot, at least) in this thread, as well as a way to identify them (and their 'safe' limits) by when they begin to lase, I think it will help those of us who are new at this (and maybe even others) in identifying their diodes!

(and it might prevent the n00bs like me from running their 0.5W c-mounts at 5W instead while testing them :) )

Just a thought,
Zithras

Edit: what I've been told so far (will try and update if someone adds more data, but it would probable be better if a forum regular took this up if there is interest):

Diode type    lases at (about) 'safe' to run at
9mm IR  below 300 mW   500 mW
9mm IR  300 mW 1W

dunno about anything in the below 500 mW range or 1-5W range

Sounds like you guys all got some cool stuff :)

I got a surprise box and a cmount grab bag.

Cmount grab bag: Mostly 808nm area, a few long-wave IR, and two red :)
Of the c-mounts I tested so far, there was a 1w 808, a 2w 808, and a 2 or possibly 4 watt 808 :o

Surprise box: Lots of cool stuff - a TO-3 laser diode with collimator (omg it's red :D ), an anti-static baggie with eleven 9mm diodes (seven 808nm, four long-wave IR), an old brick style handheld CB radio (which doesn't seem to work), a little LED pen light, some aluminum optic mount things, a little LED "laser on" indicator, a camera flash circuit, an old CPU with small heatsink/fan, a pocket digital scale, a keychain red laser, a small water fountain pump, a few RF/BNC connectors, a butterfly type square laser diode, a 24vac 1.2A transformer, a big 4700uF 400V capacitor, a PCB from a laser printer, a little bottle of UV cure glue, and I think that's it... I'll add anything if I find I left anything out.
