Heruursciences diode grab bag thread

Mario --

I got a "surprise package" from Chris a couple years ago.  Some of it was of obvious use !!  The rest, I scratched my head and tossed back in the box.
About 2 weeks later, I was looking to get an IR pass filter for my LPM-1 and I remembered one of those things in the box.  An assembly with a 1/2" IR pass filter !!!  Saved me about $30 right there.  I also figured out that one little thing is a Q switch from an SSY-1 NdYag laser head -- I have a spare !!
They are all different -- YMMV.

I paid and ordered a grab a while ago, chris does not seem to be responding to PMs or anytihng

He doesn't respond to his threads much but if you paid he should've sent it out. My grab bag did take a while but it arrived fine.

Wow Mike you got lucky with that q-switch. I guess those are pretty hard to find now, in good shape that is. Most have been overpowered and blown out.

GGus --- The SSY-1 will run OK without the switch and it is recommended that you remove it if you are going over joule rating. Just a matter of what shape pulse needed from it. With the Q switch, you can see air ionized before your very eyes (protected). ;D

Just a heads up- In addition to the paypal snafu I got the flu really bad. FWIW  I got everybody's order out today, what didn't go out today will go out tomorrow.

I received my 9 mm grab bag today as well as a few other goodies. ( thank you, Mr. Leubner) All but 3  of the diodes have some sort of code hand written on the back. It consists of a 2 letter code on top with a 3 digit code bellow.

Example:   LV
                856

Does anyone know what the markings indicate? Are they possibly a Bin number? Can they be used to determine anything about the diodes such as wavelength or power?

The letter combinations that I received are: HL, KY, LE, LG, LL, LP, LT, LV, MD, NA, & OX.

My batch consisted of 3 three pin diodes with the rest being regular 2 pin.

I am still waiting for a V4 flex drive so that I can begin testing. For now I will be using a Meredith housing in an aluminum heat sink to hold the diodes. I am very interested in learning about how the more experienced members will be going about this. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions about equipment that will make the process easier.

I used a basic LM317 driver set to about 100mA for basic sorting. I used a breadboard to connect it all up (no capacitor used to avoid current spikes)
p
That allowed me to at least immediately sort them into 1) visible diodes, aka red - 2) shortwave IR: dim red glow and 3) longwave IR: no visible light

I would test mine, but I fried my flexdrive :-[ these things really need reverse polarity protection! gah! such a simple stupid mistake :(

I orderd a grab bag too (25 diodes) :) along with 2 808nm 2 watt diodes and a 3 watt 808nm laser diode.

I have a constant current and cnstant voltage psu with controll over the voltage and current. to run the diodes .

Here are the results from my grab-bag:
1 635nm diode(!!!)
10 near IR (~808?) with very dim red and a large amount of IR according to my camera
6 long IR
1 diode putting out a tiny bit of red and no IR
2 dead

So 17 or 18 out of 20 work. I'm definitely going to build a nice lab module with the 635nm diode and a couple of IR burners as well.

Hi

Are you using a camera to tell if the diode is producing light if in the IR area im going to do the same to, will a cctv camera work .

Good luck on building the 635 lab laser do you now what the power output is of the diode is yet .

A CCTV camera should work - you can test it by pointing a TV remote at the sensor and pressing the button. You should see some fairly bright light from the remote. (that is, if it can detect IR)
