I know amk spent a lot of time searching and dealing with numerous suppliers to make this GB work. I did some looking and talking to a few suppliers as well, and quickly learned that the suppliers do their best to blow smoke up your a$$. I quickly got frustrated at them "telling me what i wanted to hear" and discontinued talking to them. I might have been born at night.... but i wasnt born last night FFS! So, I commend amk in his diligence and persistence in seeking a supplier for this GB.

I am gonna wait for IgorT's results :)
If you can't find a supplier that supplies 6x diodes for cheap, then i would want my order converted to PHRs...

Yikes Igort, that is not encouraging about the 4x! but the question still remains, can one be dropped into a GGW-H20L for use as a reader/2-4x burner?

Ok, my 2 cents.   Refund. The handwritting is on the wall, but it should be done in a way that AMK incurrs no loss. For those who want to get 803s instead of money, that is their choice. This was always a GB for 6X.   AMK, I Thank you for your heroic efforts !!!

Maybe AMK List all your different deals such as the PHR's and we can try to keep money with you? You know like a list of all options we have so we can choose.

I'd rather 3 PHR's and a long closed can red out of a 4x sled over a refund. But if that can't be done, refund for me.

If this flops and we aren't going to get 6x sleds I want a refund, I either need a laser I can build and sell for christmas or my money back so I can build a few phr lasers or one really nice phr laser or long open can red laser :-/ only 21 days till christmas :-X

Ok, i ripped some time out of my schedule and put the data i collected into a graph.

This is 11 diodes (i have one more left to test).

One of them (#7) seemed to be really good, but died after going to 170mA for the second time. The graph drops to 0 at 180, altho the diode died at 170mA nearly instantaneously.

Diode #11 is the diode that had a broken window. I assumed i damaged it somehow with that window during de-canning, altho looking at others now, it would seem to be normal. If it still had the window, the curve would just be a tiny bit lower.


The graph is a mess with 11 diodes superimposed, but it's the easiest way to compare them.

As you can see, some have really low kinks, and don't go very high when pushed.. Some don't have a kink at all (or a very slight barelly noticable one, but then die when you least expect it.


Now, these are just plots of where they can be pushed for a short time. Next i have to test how long this lasts..

I was hoping i could get 130-140mW out of each of them, without having to go above the kink. But some can do 100mW max before the kink..

I never expected the 4x to bee so similar to PHR. Someone (I don't remember who) even said that you can't get to 150mW with every PHR but you can with every 4x, if you want them to live long. I wonder how true that turns out to be.

In my PHR experience, the freaks (ones with really high efficiency) were also the ones with the highest (or no) kink, and are the ones that die the quickest. It seems that 4x of you that died is the same.

I've also had two PHRs die (semi-)instantly while increasing the current beyond a certain point. One died immediately. The other one dropped in power over a course of <5 seconds, I quickly turned the power from 170 to 160mA (where it was stable), then the power was stable again for a little while, and started dropping exponentially again until it was less than 30mW in output. Strangely enough, with the new curve, the peak power has now shifted to 85mA and above that it starts dropping at increasing rates until it settles at 30mW.

Btw, did you get my recorders yet?

ah, really "funny" gb.. 6x to 12x back to 6x down to 4x/phr!
i wont buy/use 4x diodes. i would wait (with my money) for 6x, even if it'll be some weeks.
with 5000$ to wave with, it should be possible to get a box of 6x diodes, after all, not? :-)

anyway, for me: either waiting for 6x or refund.

Igor, just to be clear - is Power in your plots - After a clear acrylic lens?

I did actually get your time recorders yesterday! Didn't you just ship them on Monday? :o

Otherwise, i think you can get 150mW out of every 4x, but it would take even more than 180mA with some!
But i don't think all of them would survive that for very long. I was hoping to get 130-140mW out of them consistently, at reasonable currents.. Now there are many which i just can't use, cos it would take too much current, to get to the desired power!

I stopped most graphs at 170 (or 180mA max for a second, just to record the power). Others, i just didn't push any further, but they could probably be pushed to 150mW. The very first 4x i tested did >150mW for a long time at only 150mA. I just hope it wasn't the best of them (in terms of durability).

I'll post more detailed graphs of each of them separatelly, but not in this thread.
I will also do lifetime tests on some of the 4x's i have left.. (these are turning out to be expensive experiments!)

I hope i can hook up your time recorders to my accelerated aging setup asap.. ;)


BTW, i think i noticed a relationship between the Vf and the power. The two highest power diodes also had the highest Vf's... Well, at least two in a row did, need to look at the rest of the data more closelly.

Yes, clear acrylic lens... If that was after glass, i'd be crying now... Just imagine how low the power with plastic would be then.

I checked their wavelengths, and that's the only thing they are consistent in. I found small variances, but they were very rare. Only a couple had a higher wl, so the power increase with glass would be consistent.


Fact is, some of the 4x's are much better than PHRs. But some are strange. I will torture the strangest of them, see what happens.

I guess i was mostly hoping on better consistency. But it would seem that won't come until the 6x's..


Oh, another thing i forgot to mention..

After compiling all the data, i don't think 4x's are the 105mW Sharp diodes anymore.... They would need to go to 200mW more easily and consistently, if they were. These could be 80mW diodes... I don't know, just guessing here... But that would put the 6x back on the 105mW Sharp pedestal...

Can't remember if I posted this anywhere else, but I ran 1 of my 4X's in a life test at 140mW for a few hours, then stepped it up to 150mW, where it died in less than 8 hours :'(
It was running continuously on a large fan-cooled heat sink.

Igor, these are the 4x diodes we payed $45-55 for a month or so ago, right? I don't remember the thread where it's discussed, but I thought several-to-many people were running them at 170+mA and getting more than 150mW ?? including me - have one in a purple Kryton Groove that's at 175mA, been running for several weeks, sometimes for 10+ minutes constant.

Your graph shows most or at least many of the diodes on a linear upward trend when you cut them off at about 165mA - so I don't see that the data matches a pessimistic conclusion.

But - you usually end up being correct, so I'm not going to say you're definitely* wrong!

*notice i said definitely. I definitely would appreciate it if people would quit using defiantly when they mean to express certainty - unless they are being challenged and are taking a strong stand... ::)
