3 then 1. Of course I paid with google checkout so I haven't lost any monies yet. I would assume it's just a few click to cancel GC's stuff. Never used it from the other side though :P

Edit2: It's also not really about the majority. I know my monies went in for 6x's not 4x's.
Maybe it's about time to start a new thread for the people still interested in continuing ::)

if it goes to 4x count me out :-/ I think he should just refund everyone until we get a true 6x supplier :-X

Well, there is more bad news....


I just finished testing the last of my 4x diodes.... How should i say this. I want to post the results. Well, i need to create graphs first. But 4x's may not be all that good. At least not all of them. Some are very very bad. I need to analyze the data before i can say anything conclusive tho...

Turns out, the one i killed for a lifetime test really could have been the best possible 4x.. Well, maybe i found one better (no kink at all), i thought i found another better one (again no kink and high power), but it simply died in secons while i was looking for kinks, at a current where a PHR would still struggle for a while (1-10 hours, but that's still more than seconds!).

Many of them have a low efficiency and a low kink. Those need ridiculous currents to be set to any appreciable power, that can not be had from a high efficiency PHR anyway.

I can maybe use one half or up to two thirds of 4x's at best, due to their efficiency. And at the same time i still don't know how long the "good" ones will last...


I say lets wait a bit. I am finishing up the testing of 13 4x diodes. There could be new developements in the 6x department, in the meanwhile i will prepare the testing results and do some more lifetime tests.

If it turns out they are not much better than PHRs, then i don't want to get 15 4x's instead of 6x's....

ok, So I guess majority wants to wait. we will. I will hold up on the poll idea for now.

These are the possibilities:

1) wait for 6x. I contacted my first supplier. I told him if he did the order for 2000 6x's, I would buy them off little by little. lets see what happens.

2) Convert to 4x: I personally do not see why these 4x's are all that bad. they hold up well especially compared to PHR's too! however, its your money, you decide. 4x's are readily available

3) refund :'( :'( :'( i hope not... I would be down a lot of bucks. once again, its your money\

4) I give you your orders worth of PHR-803T's at 15 dollars each... seems like there are a LOT of PHR zealots and fans out there... just a suggestion...


I would personally wait. just my perspective.

BTW, since you didn't give me a current, Amk, i set the "12x" to 193mA..

It's doing 153mW through a plastic lens and 180mW through the "weaker" glass lens.... And it does so with this unusually round beam. Rounder than a 6x! :o


I'm gonna do a lifetime test, altho i don't expect it to live for very long, being set so far above it's kink.....
But surprisingly enough, it didn't die yet. While i lost a 4x when i went to 170mW for a few seconds for the second time...

I was amazed that one of my PHR's lasted longer then my last 4x... so I questioned if they were even different at all. I defiantly wouldn't want to convert to the 4x sled, I would rather go with Amk's option #4 then do that, though I'd say refund would be my first choice.

Amk, I understand the 6x sleds are a pretty penny, and at these costs they're a steal. I'd almost be willing to pay more... would it entice your supplier if you were to offer him more money per sled? Just a thought...

Otherwise, I say refund 1st, then switch to 3-4 PHR's 2nd, and wait for the 6x 3rd but I don't want a $60 PHR! ;D

Again, I do speak for myself, but I'm sure we all do greatly appreciate all your efforts and I know I want to make sure you'll still come up at least a little! ;)

I apologize if this is a repeated question, but what is the guarantee that eventually (1-2 months max) we will be seeing the 6x sleds?

No 4x's for me unless the price drops to like $12 per, LOL! ;)

But I would agree to wait for a while longer for 6X's if that is what the rest want to do. I would NOT recommend doing chargebacks if we can help it. :P

I just spent the whole day testing 4x's i had left over. And some of the results were not very encouraging! Some need 150mA to reach 110-120mW! :o

It takes those 170-180mA to reach 150mW. And it is unknown how long they will last there. But since i have so many left over, i will do some lifetime tests on them. That's why i think we should wait a bit, before converting to 4x's.. The ones without a kink go up to 178mW at 170mA, but one of them just died at that current in under a minute.

I am still horribly busy, but i hope i can find some time in a day or two, to convert the data into graphs, so you all see what i'm talking about. We can base further 4x related decisions on that.

I could just be worried for no reason, but i found at least 4 extremelly bad 4x's.. I'll hook those up to the cycler, to see what happens...


Also, even the "12x" has already survived 193mA longer, than one of what i assumed to be a good 4x.. (Could just have been a bad 4x - it had the yellow halo real bad!) Altho something similar happened to one of the ebay sled "12x" diodes - it lived surprisingly long at a ridiculously high current, while all the others died almost instantly at the same or even much lower currents....



EDIT: I can't go along with the vote/majority rules thing.. Most of the 6x orders next to my name are not even my orders. If i now get 4x's again, i'll get stuck with them (again), and lose a lot of money.. I can wait, but i can't convert my order to 4x's.. At least not the entire order.

BTW, an interesting observation... I noticed the "12x" has a beam profile with a nearly identical shape to that of 16x reds! :o

All the other 405nm diodes have a realy bad aspect ratio. They put out a narrow stripe.. I assumed that's because the technology is not yet advanced enough to make them oval. 6x diodes are slightly better in this aspect. But the "12x" almost looks more advanced, if it wasn't for the low power and the low kink... :-?

Another interesting thing about it is it's golden window... All 405nm's have a slightly golden looking AR coating, but only under certain angles. This one is much more golden and noticable from angles where the other windows would not reflect anything..

Unless the 4Xs are much better than the PHRs, they are certainly not worth $55 to me. I will wait until Igor finishes gather his data on the 4Xs, and should the prove to be only slightly better than the PHRs, then I would request a refund.

Seeing IgorT's results I would not want 4x's. I can wait a little, but I feel we should set some cutoff date so this money isn't sitting in limbo indefinitely. My original order for two has been withdrawn from my account (the original batch 3 order), but my card could be charged for the second order of 3 any day. With Christmas looming the instability with my account is not desired.

Either way Amk deserves a ton of credit for dealing with all this madness.

DrLava & I were the first to fire up the 6x Blu. I don't want to go down to less. I'm happy to wait.

Only slightly better than PHRs? I was waiting for some more definitive tests before hooking mine from batch 2 up. Well that sucks, I thought I should have waited and not bought any until these tests were done, but then thought I might miss out on these things with the "only 100 available".

I know better now, won't make that mistake again.
