Re: GB#1st of PL-E Pro Lasers and PL-E 2.0/3.0 Clearance - May 2013

I think i have a problem with my tailcap :( (100%sure now)

When i don't use it and make direct contact with a piece of metal, the readings are better.

When using the tailcap it doesn't want to go to the 800mW it should, but without it it shoots right up to >800mW if that makes sence.
I first thought it needed warming up, but after testing my 1W krypton from WL a few times it shoots right up to 900mW, so it had to be something else.

Don't know what's up with that.

With tailcap, unstable. (readings <400mW 600mW lot's of power drops)
Without tailcap, stable high readings.

The LPM video i made earlier was using the adapter.

What to do,

Cheers, Sm.

In this video i'm first using the tailcap, and then a piece of coper i had lying around.

The tailcap does drop about 100mA in my tests with the 473.

Re: GB#1st of PL-E Pro Lasers and PL-E 2.0/3.0 Clearance - May 2013

The tailcap does drop about 100mA in my tests with the 473.

Over here it's resulting in very unstable readings, (lot's of power drops ''fluxuate'' even to only 200mW) olmost made me contact Gray that there was something wrong with my laser.

But thankfully it's the tailcap.

awaiting response from Gray :)

*Update*

110% sure that it's a tailcap problem.
laser output's over 900mW without tailcap, and with tailcap it only does 600 or less

I think it has to do with the jackplug or something else.
But everything in the tailcap is glued so i can't look inside or fix the problem myself.

Cheers, Sm.

Hey Dennis,
Sorry for being late - and the issue - i just watched the vid.
1. just wondering if you can meter the battery and see how much V it is - better 4.1v+ .
2. like I see you used a button top 18650. Can you try with a flat 18650 or 26650? I tested it with a fully charged 26650 4000mah, flat top.
3. the discharge current for 800mw dpss green is very high, like 2.7A.
The safety pin on the tail generates high resistance when the current is too high. It will affect the output power of the laser and the power.
4. When you test it for a few mins, pls give it a bit rest to cool off before metering it again. Natural air cooling takes some time off to regain.

Thanks and let's see if it works better.

OKay

A few quick nite shots including moving camera--
two graphs done 3 min each second one about 4 min later
after #2 laser was only very slightly warmer.

Single KK battery fresh off Nitecore i2 very nice charger.

Carsen is maybe up waiting for this- but the news is good

One of the best lasers I have inspected at this power.
beam was the thinest too;
divergence will be calculated in the morning but I can tell you at apeture it was tiny
like less than 2mm- at 14 feet it was still quite small.
The tree i the pics is ~70 feet away- laser in tripod
Camera handheld,

LPM (Beta) Radiant X soft by Trevor White 'Lightspeed'<Comp of Radiant- TY
test one PEAK 782.83mW
Average 692mW
test two
Peak 760.69mW
Average 660mW

Hey Dennis,
Sorry for being late - and the issue - i just watched the vid.
1. just wondering if you can meter the battery and see how much V it is - better 4.1v+ .
i'll see what i can do, but i must say i use cells fresh of the charger, 26650 and 18650.
2. like I see you used a button top 18650. Can you try with a flat 18650 or 26650? I tested it with a fully charged 26650 4000mah, flat top.
I use button top cells and flat cells again fresh of the charger 26650 and 18650 (same results).
3. the discharge current for 800mw dpss green is very high, like 2.7A.
The safety pin on the tail generates high resistance when the current is too high. It will affect the output power of the laser and the power.
Well then i have a problem sinds it doesn't go above 600mW with the tailcap on, and when it reaches 700mW it drops down to <500.
4. When you test it for a few mins, pls give it a bit rest to cool off before metering it again. Natural air cooling takes some time off to regain.
test were done no longer then 1 min, tested with variable cells... tailcap on tailcap off etc.. giving me the results like in the video.

Tested it again just now (laser was off for 8 hours) with a flat top cell 18650, and again it show's the same results like in the video.

<500mW with tailcap on
>800mW with tailcap off

Thanks a lot for your time.
It is very weird - i didnot test the laser with any ac adapter.
Could you let me know what reads on your battery voltage? This is the info needed. If it goes <4.1v, that tells something - if it is, let me know.
Thanks again.
Yours,
Gray
PS: No worries for now coz we can arrange shipping u a new one after sending u a clear LPM vid running on a 4.1v+ battery. Let's figure out where the issues lie now.:)

I'm making a video of it, please stand by..

Re: GB#1st of PL-E Pro Lasers and PL-E 2.0/3.0 Clearance - May 2013

Made this video, and even in this video it show's the tailcap is not doing it's work couse the jackplug fails to make a good connection.
The LED's light up but no beam untill i give the jackplug a tap.

This is like i said a unstable laser with the tailcap it's using..

All i need is a new tailcap that holds the jackplug tighter so it makes a good connection...

I can't proof anything more other then this video. (and other video's i made)
The 26650 last tested was not good couse the battery sticks out more and is harder to press in with the coper ring thus also resulting in poor connection.
(But you get the idea, hopefully)

Conclusion on my end is that the tailcap (jackplug) is not making good contact (pritty Obvious in the video) resulting in unstable readings and even not powering up (twice) like it show's in this video were the LED's are lit but no beam come's out untill i give the jackplug a tap.

The laser is not the problem, but the tailcap is.

So with saying ''shipping a new one'' i hope you mean only a new tailcap, couse the laser is fine.
A new tailcap with no Jackplug is even better if that's possible.

Hope this falls under service/warranty and a replacement tailcap is in order.

Let me know,

Cheers, Sm.

Re: GB#1st of PL-E Pro Lasers and PL-E 2.0/3.0 Clearance - May 2013

Well -- Well ..

In watching Smeerworst's video -- I see my Laser operates differently than his.

Upon arming the Laser -- His has 3 Green lights next to his momentary switch. I also have these same 3 lights but -- Mine are always RED. To be clear -- Once mine is armed my lights are RED. Then depressing either the momentary switch or depressing the on button -- Then the top 2 lights turn a purple - Top one is the brightest and the bottom one doesn't change.

He has a jack plug - As well as mine. When he removes his and arms the Laser nothing happens when one depresses the momentary button or the on button. On mine -- I don't need a jack plug. Just arm and she's ready to light when either button is pushed next to the 3 RED lights. To be clear -- On mine -- either with or without the jack plug I simply arm by pushing the arming button next to the jack plug -- The 3 RED lights come on and I simply push one of the 2 buttons and She lights up.

I also received a short curly cord with a stereo plug on one end and a weather proof switch on the other end. Inserting this into the female jackplug in the tail cap does nothing. I push the switch several times either armed or not and the 3 lights don't light up. For my purpose I don't need this remote switch.

Long story short -- Mine works for my intended purpose so I'm not asking for any assistance. Being I don't have an LPM -- I don't know if mine fluxuates or not. Seems bright to me and my intended purpose is bird abaitment and to this end is working perfectly so I'm Happy.

Just use these examples of what seems like issues and thoroughly test before shipment so every customer is Happy with their purchase.

Until I saw this video I wasn't going to post my minor issues - But .. To make the product better I decided to make this post -- Thank You.

Dave
