GB#1st of PL-E Pro Lasers and PL-E 2.0/3.0 Clearance - May 2013

Re: GB#1st of PL-E Pro Lasers and PL-E 2.0/3.0 Clearance - May 2013

Well -- Well ..

In watching Smeerworst's video -- I see my Laser operates differently than his.
Thanks much for your feedback -let's check them one by one.

Upon arming the Laser -- His has 3 Green lights next to his momentary switch. I also have these same 3 lights but -- Mine are always RED. To be clear -- Once mine is armed my lights are RED. Then depressing either the momentary switch or depressing the on button -- Then the top 2 lights turn a purple - Top one is the brightest and the bottom one doesn't change.
Yes, some led indicator are red, some are green - we first used the green mini leds for the green but some customers said the indicator is too weak, so we changed it to red which are more visible. But green is also okay.

Three led indicators are all on when the general switch(tail switch) is on and when you depress the momentary button, only the first two leds turn blue - it tells the upper button(momentary button) is working.
He has a jack plug - As well as mine. When he removes his and arms the Laser nothing happens when one depresses the momentary button or the on button. On mine -- I don't need a jack plug. Just arm and she's ready to light when either button is pushed next to the 3 RED lights. To be clear -- On mine -- either with or without the jack plug I simply arm by pushing the arming button next to the jack plug -- The 3 RED lights come on and I simply push one of the 2 buttons and She lights up. I also received a short curly cord with a stereo plug on one end and a weather proof switch on the other end. Inserting this into the female jackplug in the tail cap does nothing. I push the switch several times either armed or not and the 3 lights don't light up. For my purpose I don't need this remote switch.

I get it. Your jack plug was disabled - to make it work, it takes a bit mods on the circuit inside the tailcap. The remote switch works the same way as the jack plug. If you wanna it to be enabled, i can get you a new tailcap - it solves the problem and makes both the jack plug and the curly cord plug(mousetail switch) work - then without them plugged, the laser will not be switched on whatsoever. :)

Just use these examples of what seems like issues and thoroughly test before shipment so every customer is Happy with their purchase.
Until I saw this video I wasn't going to post my minor issues - But .. To make the product better I decided to make this post -- Thank You.
Dave

Thanks Dave for every feedback - very helpful - anyway let me know if you wanna make a change on the tailcap. :)

Hmm. If these prices are going to be good past May 31st getting one of the 473nm listed in the OP is almost a certainty.

I do have a couple quick questions for either Gray or Hak. I see the 473nm in the PL-E Pro can use either 18650 or 26650 batteries but I assume given the choice a 26650 would be the better option. I have to order a bunch of batteries for other lasers/lights anyways so is there a reason to not go with the 26650? Also will protected batteries fit in this host as I much prefer them over unprotected cells whenever possible.

The last is about shipping since I live about 600 miles (1000km) north of Hak in Iowa I'm guessing shipping to him first wouldn't save much if anything on shipping. Honestly since I tend to be an impatient SOB when it comes to waiting for new "toys" to arrive I'd probably just opt for the 3-5 day shipping since at $20 it's offered at a very reasonable cost.

Hello LtKernelPanic,
Thanks for your attention and you're right that PL-E Pro lasers take a single 18650 or 26650 and the reason why 26650 is more preferable is probably that PL-E Pro laser is a 26650 host itself and 26650 batts usually have more mah and they are considered to last longer than 18650 which ranges mainly from 2100mah to 3100mah - sure regarding the battery life, it is not 100% true.

For 18650s, we also recommend sanyo 2600mah and samsung 2800mah unprotected batts which were tested by us to last decently long. Yes, protected 18650s and 26650s are also fine and make sure they are flat top type and of same length with flat top 18650/26650 otherwise the threads might not fit perfectly but it will work anyway.

Speaking of shipping, as Hak has been stocking a variety of batts like 18650/26650/14500/16650, if you source batts from him, it will be a better option
our shipping the laser to him first and if you just wanna get the PL-E Pro laser body asap regardless of batts things, shipping to you directly from China via UPS is probably the better options.

Thanks! :)

I dont know this for certain but I think you will be able to enjoy these prices For a bit longer

These 26650s that I have here for JL/Gray are quite good- 4000mAh and priced right. bfore you buy elsewhere allow me to give you a quote on your needs. The shipping get reasonable if you buy more as Fed Ex charges us the same for a single battery as they do for a pound of them. BUT sorry none of the li-ions I have here are button tops. All are flat toppers. IIRC the main advantage is the extra circuit mainly keeps the battery from draining completely ( a bad thing to do to a Li-ion) but JL lasers are made wth the use of button tops in mind- this is the reason in a few cases that we place a spacer(magnet) to make a good connection

I too get antsy waiting but even tho you wont save a lot of $$ by sending to me first you will get a good inspection- a Power graph and there will be a savings by letting me send you everything including batts and/or a niteCore i2. On very few rare occasions some JLs did not pass my inspection- and the buyer would not have liked to get it directly . I send it back at JLs expense and a better one is shipped ASAP- just filling out all the forms at the PO is a big PITA- if you don't do it right even more delays can happen aside form a bigger cost to return. So it can be a trade-off.

Judging by past experience the quicker way and not all that more expensive way would be to have Gray ship directly with you especailly if he is able to do that THIS time for only $20-the Odds are greatly in favor of a perfect laser coming direct from JK- and in light of a few probelms lately I am sure that a tighter control will be used to avoid any problems like those with the tailcap.

JL chose to make the laser ready for the longer protected cells- thus the need, on occasion, for the use of a magnet spacer- to make the laser shorter would mean the longer battery would be a bit too long and the tailcap would have a small gap created by the extra length of the battery.

ALSO-- I recently had a problem with another brand of 26650 battery- it had a paper label that made it a VERY tiny bit bigger- the KKs slide in and out with no problems-( but you can see that there is not much extra room for a 'thicker' abtt) but if you use any battery that is the size of the one ... problems....that one took a long time to remove (a vacuum was caused and getting it out was not easy) now if this had been with a Pro as it comes apart the battery could have been easily 'pushed' out -- this was a not a Pro and the front and batt tube are glued together- so the only option was to pull it out and there is no easy way to get it out---BOTTOM line- On ANY laser take care to avoid any battery that you must use some force to insert- in a JL laser as the tolerance is , while perfect for KKs, is too tight for any 26650 that may have a greater diameter..

Thanks for the replies Gray and Hak. I was going to reply last night until a near by exploding tree made me think better of turning on the computer.

Glad to hear the hosts will work with protected cells. I managed to run three of my 10440s down to between .5-.75v once because I forgot to unhook a driver I was designing from my test load. They still work but don't charge to the full 4.2v anymore. I'll try the batteries I ordered for my other stuff first since I needed them anyways and if they're not the right fit I'll definitely be in contact with Hak to get some from him.

Anyhow Gray I'll be PMing you for ordering info soon I think.

Re: GB#1st of PL-E Pro Lasers and PL-E 2.0/3.0 Clearance - May 2013

Wanted to let you all know and thank gray for shipping a new tailcap to me.

Did a 7min LPM run with it on a 18650 cell, and it stayed above 800mW :D with peaks over 1W.

Does for 5 min a lovely 850mW without much dipping :)

Thank you gray!

I have a LPM with power graph in the works for me.
So much easyer then making video's, but if you want i can upload it.. but not today :) ''it's late''

Also got a couple of KK 26650's comming.

Re: GB#1st of PL-E Pro Lasers and PL-E 2.0/3.0 Clearance - May 2013

GREAT^^ another happy ending- Gray has a knack for doing that--

I will jump in here and say i have some worries about how hot the Pl-E Pro 532/300 got last night during my LPM power graphing session-

the first of these 3 min runs I was underwhelmed-

but the laser had been stored in a well a/c-ed room and the power did start to climb towards the end and became more stable- i watched the meter continue to climb after the graphng stopped for another 30 sec or so. and shut the laser down.

(it was on the ac/dc wall wart ($12) from JL) I got my the second graph ready on my laptop for test #2, and I did not time this, but it was on stand-by (rest)for at least two/three minutes- the leds were on the entire time...
I started #2 and the results were better however at the end of the 180 sec run the laser was more than 'just warm' and it felt like the part to the rear was hotter- ? could this mean the heat was from the driver?++

was/is 8 vdc@ 5A from the wart providing too much and that is turning to heat on the driver??

I realize that being DPSS more of the front part is taken up by not only the internal focus system but the parts in front of the IR Pump. .SO I let it cool completely down-but never seeing 'under the hood' i may be wrong about the drivers location in there...

did a much better test #3 and both the peak and average were better and at the end of the 3 mn test the laser was barely warm- The wall wart 'SEZ' 8vdc at 5A but if you have ever measured a wall wart on a DMM you know that they can be much higher VDC= or lower that the labels and no load makes a diff reading too.

My plan for this 300 mW it to use it only with a single KINGKONG and keep the run time below 3 or 4 min.. I have tested many PL-E lasers and the only huge diff between one or multiple batts of all sizes seems to be mostly in the run time and not very much on the output--

here are some pics- will ad actual graph later when I am ay my 'office'.

''' Lunitic Fringe' is playing on the oldies radio station- note to self: make a laser show to go with this CRAZY good song..

Re: GB#1st of PL-E Pro Lasers and PL-E 2.0/3.0 Clearance - May 2013

My PL-E Pro 532/400 arrived today - what a monster! It's almost a work of art, I can't wait until I get a chance to put it to use in my programs.

I have to say a huge thank you and kudos to Gray for all of your support and accommodating my requests. It has been a real pleasure doing business with you!

I also have an older PL-C with a failed switch - he sent a replacement switch with the PL-E. It's now installed and my PL-C is working perfectly again. What great customer service!

I've done business with a lot of people and few have the integrity and obvious genuine good customer service that Gray and Jetlasers have.

Thanks! :yh:Yes, the ac adapter will generate more heat than batts - so keeping it <3mins is okay. 5V5A ac adapter is better - we should have chosen 5v5a but in order to simplify things and make all PL-E Pro wavelengths like 445nm and 532nm share a same ac adapter, we made it more voltage tolerant.
