FS 1st generation kryton host - LPF donation

What a shame that this has gotten so few bids. I don't think the newer members understand what kind of history this thing is. Yeah, it may be 4-5 years old, but this is an original piece of art. I was planning to bid at least $85 once my laser sold, but the claimed buyer has since disappeared... Good luck to the lucky soul that gets to claim this beauty. Will be waiting for the next one to hit the market! :D

So can anyone explain what's so special about this host ?
What's the history behind it then ?

Cheers, sm..

Have you heard of a kryton groove? This is it's predecessor. Only a handful were made, and I collect krytons so I've been eyeing one of these for some time now, and one happens to hit the market when I'm broke :/

well folks, time is running short. the "auction" ends at 11 am cdst. i will sell this fine example of hobbyist ingenuity for the low, low, low price of $70 - that's shipped now, in the usa. it comes with nothing, just the host. and as i said earlier, the sales price, minus shipping and paypal fees, will go directly to the forum. i want to give something back, and i need a partner to make that happen.:thanks:

edit: i'll throw in a 3 element 405 lens with cover

ok, i did have an offer of $60 from machinist joe. should i take it? i'm asking a behind the scenes bidder this question. joe, you still in?

Thanks for offering this up, Cheech

Too bad there are not more true "collectors"

History doesn't mean much to the young :(

Peace,
dave

You must have ignored my posts :p I've been collecting Krytons for a little bit now, and had I had the money, I would've bid on this in a heartbeat. This is the beginning of diode-pressed hosts. It's a shame the Kryton aged died off, there was a great idea there. Have fun with your new host, and don't be surprised if you get a $100 offer PM later on down the road :na:

If you read more carefully, you will see that I said "not MORE collectors"

There are a few. You are becoming one of them

The very first hand-held laser I ever *bought* was in a Kryton Smooth barrel
It was a 6X (405nm) built by drlava
I paid $600 for it ;)
Before y'all freak out too much, at the time, we were buying 6X burners for ~$350 EACH just to be able to harvest a single diode from it
So;
$350 for the diode
$70 for the host
$25 for the flexdrive (ver. 1 -- cutting edge technology at the time)
$15 for insured, signature delivery
$20 for PayPal fees
$5 for batteries
$5 for misc parts and costs

That leaves ~$125 for labor. At the time, for a custom laser, that was NOT out of line

Y'all have no idea how sweet the early pioneers in this hobby have made this for you

Peace,
dave

$350? Ouch, that's intense. Take good care of this one chief.

The 20mW SONAR II 405nm was $2000 these days.

altho this sale turned out quite a bit different from my fantasy, i'm glad some cash was raised to help out here.
i can remember drooling over edmund catalogs when i was young. dave's right, it's easy now to have lasers as a hobby.:thanks:
