Re: FS: >110mW PHR, >140mW 4x & >170mW 6x Blu-Rays
I have this theory on diode efficiency and their toughness.. Since i will use the (so called) "weaklings" for my torture-tests, i might just be surprised by the end results! I mentioned my theory before in other threads, but i won't go into details, until the torture-tests are finished (= diodes dead)..
When i bought my first 6x diode for $350 just a few months back, and "only" got 193mW at 200mA, i thought my diode was low efficiency.. I thought "just my luck".. I was told i'd get 200mW at 180-200mA!
Now i see the ones that do 193mW at 200mA are actually the good ones. Then there are some that do almost exactly 200mW at 200mA, and one overshot and went to 227!
But my "low efficiency" $350 6x diode has been through so much by now, and not only is it still alive, it is currently putting out 260mW through the medium custom lens!
It's been degrading, and i said it would die soon numerous times, but it keeps "dissapointing" me.. In a good way..
I was wrong when i thought i got a bad one. And how! I got a good one... A very good one!
By now it's been through so much, that it would have survived over a year in a normal user's hands... Maybe two. And it's still going strong. Even if it dies tomorrow, it would have been an amazing diode. I just hope the others are like it!
This is the reason i am willing to go this high with 6x diodes, when it comes to power. In my hands, a >150mW PHR only lives a week or two. Three at best. Unless of course i don't use it. But you can't call that "living".
As much as it hurts, i WILL need to do a competition between a freak and a "weakling" 6x, both set to the same power, just to test the theory. This means one very efficient diode is going to suffer on the cycler... The weaklings are all condemned allready...
But it's possible, the lower efficiency diodes could turn out to be better than it seems right now. We shall see..
They would definitelly make good medium high power lasers, like you said.. And thats worth something too. Cos right now, we don't really have a diode that is reliable at 150-160mW. Sometimes 4x's can survive that, but of
