When I see too-good-to-be-true scams, I think of it as liberating money from people who are too stupid to have it.

That ipad scam is just idiotic. Surely buying one at a gas station like that would imply its probably stolen and all, but the least you could do it have a good look at it (and actually turn in on) before handing over the money.

I wonder why they used a mirror though - i suspect the pun in that is that people that fall for the con actually see the stupid look on their face when they discover it - making it also a win of sorts :D

So this came into my inbox today....

To me this is not just a fail, it's also downright scary when people can be jailed simply for being strange...

Granted I agree it's crazy and stupid to wear a watch like that to an airport, or any place aside from a custom party, but why was he still not only questioned, but also detained, and arrested once it was clear there was no evidence at all of it actually being an explosives device?

Because it is also illegal to bring a "bomb decoy" into a public place
The emergency and safety response is the same for a "real" bomb or a fake bomb
The response itself carries both public safety concerns and public expense

It is also illegal to carry a device capable of triggering an explosive
The same response concerns from above apply here

Terrorists often try to get a "fake" device through a security system first, to test for weaknesses in the system and to learn more about the emergency response

Finally, since stupid doesn't really hurt (it should ;) ) arresting him is the least we can do to remove him, even temporarily, from the gene pool

That.... actually makes a lot of sense. :p

I guess what really concerns me is, anyone with a cell phone would fall under the same criteria

But that's kinda the same as the elderly getting scammed, they aren't really deserving, just oblivious to the truth.
Being apple fan is like being a bug, they lack the cognitive capacity to realize what a cruel joke nature has actually played on them. :na:

I don't have sympathy for many of those old folk either. Often they get scammed because they're just being greedy or penny-wise/pound-foolish cheap. What I really hate is when the rest of society has to pick up the pieces (like the effect of those idiots who bought into adjustable-rate mortgages).
