Age is a state of mind...You're how old again? 55?
not necessarily a chronological milestone..
@twhite828... things only seem to degrade when people can't
agree...

The term newbie entered usage on the internet in the eighties through newsgroups, and evolved from there.
Am I trying to make you adapt? No.
Here's an extreme example for you - the term 'negro' was in colloquial use to describe a person of African descent in times past, but now when someone from that generation uses that descriptor, people are offended - because it ended up as a term of condescension. Is this the Black community being unwilling to adapt?
And if you're not interested in trying to cultivate new members of my generation, who are educated in internet culture and terminology, then it is not my job to convince you otherwise. Though I would expect something better from a pillar in the community.
But the fact remains the same - 'noob' is derogatory. The choice lies with you what to do with that fact.

Sorry mate. Googling or searching Wikipedia is not the same as living it.
The combination of these four letters is NOT offensive. They are neutral. Some people take offense at them. Some do not. If some are offended and some are not, then the offense is NOT in the term. The offense is in the mind of the person being offended. If you believe that "NooB" is offensive, then it is offensive to you. Don't use it. It does not offend me in the least. I will continue to use it.
The problem lies in both your desire to make others adapt to your beliefs (that we should not use the term because it is offensive) AND the belief that 20 years is some representation of permanence. You say you are not trying to make me adapt, yet your post was written specifically to try to get us (including me) to stop using a term because you believe it is offensive. Asking me to change my behavior is asking for adaptation to your beliefs. As far as 20 years being somehow permanent, I have ties and suspenders that old.
The language has changed. The languge is changing. The language will continue to change. You cannot keep up with it unless you are actively soliciting input from a significant majority of the population.
With regard to being "politically correct" we are ALWAYS trying to play "catch up."
I have a colleague who's area of study is slang in just the college environmnet. Even with expending ~30 hours a week (for over four years)on the study, she has determined that she cannot keep up. Her study has degraded into simply being a qualitative, longitudinal "record" of the changes.
It is funny that you mention that you are worried that the vets will neg rep you for disagreeing with them. Last night, as I signed off, I was just considering positive repping you for carrying on a mature discussion about this disagreement. LOL!
I don't use the rep system vindictively or capriciously
Peace,
