Re: Do you carry your laser as self defense at nig

Not if headlines read "man wards off mugger with laser pointer"

Besides, if you get kidnapped, you can burn through the rope an escape.

Haha, that's the most impractically practical use of a laser I can think of.

(I'd just use my trusty swiss army knife)

^ why, do you think that if someone kidnap you, they left you your knife ? :p :D

(or the laser, or anything other, if for that ;))

Depends on how thorough the search is. There is always the option of a pen knife (which I actually use:p) or you can put a razor blade or two into your belt.

Yeah I know, I'm paranoid:tinfoil:

Or develop situational awareness. The best weapon of all. The weapon that ends all engagements before they begin.

If you have that, The gun is an insurance policy, the knife adds comprehensive coverage, and the laser adds a lower deductable to boot.

2 is 1, one is none. The more options you have the better, practical or not.

Yup. I carry a templar on my belt, three folding knives in each pocket, a flamethrower in my backpack, a revolver in the pocket with my wallet and an AK-47 inside my trouser leg. My belt buckle is loaded with a high explosive and in my other trouser leg there is a battery powered 500W Argon.

Don't you think a knife, a gun AND a laser all carried for self defence is a bit excessive?

Hmmm ..... depend ..... if the gun is a 9 para loaded with 16 frag bullets, and the knife is a machete or a katana, then i suppose you can left the laser at home (or carry it just for the fun ) ..... :p :D :eg:  :na:

When i go out at night sometimes i take my 1W 445nm laser and shine it at the sky !

^^ yeah but the only way you can tell tell is when the card gets declined, lol

Really? For self defense?
How often are you assaulted by the sky?
I can hear you now... "take that, SKY"

I carry a Gun "anyway" And I carry a laser because its a hobby.

The knife is in the first aid kit, along with 3 spare mags, enough food to last a 3 day hike. Which is always within 100 yards. because the knife is impractical for carry. I mainly use it for fire and shelter making because the weight and size is suitable for chopping and notching wood, and it also makes a fine hunting knife, and combat knife. It does lots of things decently, but not really one thing well. But saves weight. But I wouldn't "carry" it unless SHTF.

Its hardly excessive. Its as simply as carrying your lap top out to the car.

Everything has multiple uses. IF you cant think of three uses or more, leave it at home. Even the gun makes a good hammer (steel frame only for me) , and a source of flammable gun powder.

All goes back to self reliance. Its only excessive if you believe its the job of the police to keep you safe, and the job of grocery stores, their suppliers, their truckers, and the fuel industry to keep you fed.

I live in the centre of Copenhagen, the capital of very safe and stable country, so the whole "survivalist in the wilderness" mindset looks like a silly foreign hobby. :)

We recently had a rainstorm leading to power outages, sewer water in cellars, and trouble getting around. I have non-perishable food for a few days at home.

It is sort of silly as you say if you look at the state of the world. So much is provided for us, conveniently. But I look at the potential of things and the what ifs..and there simply is not enough man power in government organizations to see to it we can be taken care of.

if for whatever reason infrastructure should fail and you can no longer go to the grocery store because its shelves are empty. What then. Unlikely..but I would rather be prepared.

And there are multiple possibilities, what with various NASA footage of launches against unknown targets, suspension of the space shuttle program (for many reasons other than paranoid ones..its a good budget cut..and the shuttle program is not needed when we can focus resources into seriously getting things done on mars..the moon...etc..or a new generation of space vehicles or orbital insertion). The threat of yellow stone, near earth objects..the sun reaching a peak of solar flare activity that could potentially damage electronic infrastructure, flash mob attacks in non conceal carry states, people becoming more and more upset at the state of the economy and politics, the drop in our credit rating.

Given all of these I think any issues with be social more than anything. Social chaos seems more likely than a spontaneous failure of established infrastructure. but that in itself will make it difficult for things to function.

Nothing wrong with carrying a gun or knife. Even for the simple thug.

You have had some nasty examples of emergency services not working too well, Katrina is one, and there were rather long riots some decades ago.
A breakdown is not just determined by how well FEMA or equivalent is working, but also by peoples perception of it. If enough people believe society have broken down, it does.

We have different regulations.

Things can happen anywhere. I don't see anything broken down here.
