Do you carry your laser as self defense at night?

I carry a 445 walking at night, not for self defense but for awe, however the folks in my neighbored, not the best one by the way, and have witnessed the power of 445 :P I think they would think twice, before making me blind them :P.

We have had drivebys in the past but blinding some of the bad shots around here would probably just make them more a danger :P

Anyway I have been asked to make de-focused 445s personally for self defense but I wont do it.

Also I have been in a fight that led to me giving cpr, the guy died but I did all I could. What it comes down to is knowing how to save someone obligates me to try if they will die without my help. thats just me though

Fascinating thread.

Since laws are kind of restrictive in NY/NJ I stick to carrying a couple of 3" knives, a tactical pen, and a flashlight. I consider myself lucky though, that so far I've never actually had to pull them out in self defense.

While I carry a laser on me, usually the 200mW o-like transformable... it's strictly for fun.

I would imagine a defocused 445nm 1W+ would work to blind an attacker, but at close quarters, I'll trust my knives instead.

If I lived in a state where it is possible to legally carry... I probably would.

It's basically just a very rugged pen with a glass breaker tip. It also happens to write quite nicely...

While I wouldn't want to have to use it in any defensive manner, if I had to, it would be helpful.

hmmm, if people here keep saying "its hard to aim"
why not get a 3000 lumen flashlight and just blind them for 5 mins? :P

oh yeah :P
then maybe a 2000 one? :P
thats standard 18650 sized

I'm not as up to date on flashlights now days, but if you want a decent light, and not one that will die in minutes - aka an edc light - you will need something of reasonable size.

I like fairly small flashlights, and for those the max output seems to be ~300 lumens. Certainly if someone's vision is night adapted even a 50 lumen strobe will work for a few seconds, but I don't think you realize how quickly people intent on doing harm can adapt.

A dazzler - discussed earlier in this thread I think?- would be more effective imho.

You could have a 8-900 lumen with just one 18650 and fit it in your jacket pocket.
Jeans pockets are limited to 2-300 lumen.

Unless you are capable of some customising. :D

More often than not I'm not wearing a jacket... although sometimes I'll wear a sport coat for added pocket room/concealment.

So to me in general lights fall into two categories... the small enough for jeans/khakis or huge ones that are carried on a shoulder strap:p

300 lumen is pocketeable, more than that... idk, not so much with any decent run time. If I'm wrong... please let me know, I love small super bright things:D

Sorry, I had some plans involving direct driving a LED in a small custom heat sinked light*. Unfortunately one vessel had a lousy lathe, then I did not get the lights with me, and now I am looking for a new temp job.

Personally I have a tiny light on my key chain and a selection of 150-250 lumen small priceangles lights for my jeans. 16340 or CR2 ones.

*Forget runtime. :D

I rarely walk around at night, but I'd bet either 100-200 lumens to the face (Cree flashlight), or my 1.1 Watt blue beast (ouch) would work pretty well as a deterrent...

To be honest, using my minor skills in karate would work better than a light/laser to the face, as it's trivial to incapacitate someone with a few quick moves (although if I could actually do it is another question).

Re: Do you carry your laser as self defense at nig

Lol @ tactical pen. I'LL DRAW YOU TO DEATH!!!
The pen-laser is mightier than the sword...?

cause if its over 1mw, its a weapon :-/
So is this actual federal or state law?
More details on this if someone could...

How about felons and lasers? They can't have guns but what about mW in laser power?

I'd definitely carry a laser for protection if a high enough power was "street legal"
Many people don't like knives, and many states don't allow guns on person.

Having a laser is better than having nothing in some instances.

(now imagine if it made the news)

If a a major laser incident hit the news, it would be the end of the laser hobby for everyone I would think :yabbem:

Not if headlines read "man wards off mugger with laser pointer"

Besides, if you get kidnapped, you can burn through the rope an escape.
