Anyone looking for plans on how to make your own DIY BEAM EXPANDER ?

Laser Pointer Range Extender

col1k.gif
Decreases beam spread of visible and infra red lasers by a factor of 7 at far field. Simple to construct, fits most laser pointers with simple shimming. Kit includes lenses and plans. Other parts are easily obtainable from your hardware store. COLMIN1 - Plans ............................Free Download
COLMIN1K - Lens Kit/Plans ........................$49.95

This is located in http://www.amazing1.com/ I thought that maybe some adventurous soul would like to take a stab at this............rob

Beam expanders aren't a magic act. Use the lens formulas and -- Presto --- you have an expander.

Its still a nice drawing on how to make one from a couple of lenses and some plastic plumbing parts. I might actually give it a go, seems easier than using a laser pointer and binoculars - though that does work fine.

hmm what visual changes would the beam exhibit after this? if the beam diameter is smaller, I would expect a BR or R diode beam to look closer to a green.

the point is to make the beam-diameter wider, so it spreads less. double the diameter, half the spreading (=half the divergence). so you would have a smaller dot at large distances.

@ BENM, A better & easier to handle idea instead of using binoculars, is to use a MONOCULAR. It's like using 1/2 of a binocular. They're very inexpensive to buy, & I think DX carries some. You can also get them at places like WalMart in the sporting goods section, where they sell Rifle scopes & binoculars. If you can't find them there, go to the golfing supplies section, & ask for a golf ball RANGE FINDER, (same thing, but has distance graduations inside to read distances to the TEE).............rob

Why would you want that when you can just attach a binoculars? You even have the other side to look the laser at the distance!

@ Hallucynogenyc-A golf ball RANGE FINDER does the same thing, but has distance graduations inside to read distances to the TEE as I posted earlier. It's more convenient than binoculars............rob

I often use a ocular lens (eyepiece) of a stereomicroscope as beam expander. With a standard c-mount it is also possible to connect it easily to a laser pointer. It works very well :)

I'm sorry, I only halfway explained what I meant. If it works in one direction to expand the beam, then putting it on backwards should make the beam smaller. Correct? so it would be a beam expander/concentrator depending on the direction the light was moving. Right? This would probably double the divergence, but at close range, would the beam look nice and thin and easier to see as it would be much more concentrated? (until the double divergence made it spread out and vanish)

Thanks,
StridAst

exactly! so you may use it as a "burn everything in this room by pointing at it" in beam-shrinker-mode, or "have a 100miles visible beam" in expander-mode. or, probably the most impressive option, "i ignite stuff at 100m" in expander-mode focused at that distance! :-)

And that is what I do with my RPL now my expander did cost more than your, 47$ expander mine was about 200$ with shipping : ) lol.... when I bought it off e bay I almost felt like I was stealing .....
Would recommend you go on eBay and just looking for companies that are either upgrading or going out of business…. I have a Melles Griot 30x beam expander Ar coded lenses : )
oh and i have popped a balloon at 100 yards : )

100 yards ??? That's incredible !!!!! The old adage of "You get what you pay for" holds true again. Man, 100 yards !!! Did you do this at a football field ??? rob
