^^^ Lol, To me, Nichia asking $3264 for each diode 478nm 20mW

They are crazy

OK, I received the quote. it ranges from $382.50 for one to $338.92 each for 500.

I guess it all depends on how badly you want one. :D

OTOH, at least it wasn't $3,500 each like Nichia quoted me for the 445nm diodes.

Garoq - to clarify, that's $382 for one of the ML501P73 (500mW CW 638nm) ?

Is there any other cost on top of that? (like astronomical shipping, or other fees?)

That is correct, the ML501P73-02. They are FOB Florida but I doubt the shipping cost will be more than a few dollars. No other quoted costs.

Lead time is 2-3 weeks for small quantities, 8-10 weeks for production. There were 4 pages of terms and conditions attached, in very small print.

Considering that's well below half of what 500mW 635's usually go for.. It's not a bad price. The 445's really do have everybody spoiled and everyone thinks ALL wavelengths should be available in 2W for <$50 without understanding how supply and demand works.

Ok interesting.

Agreed.

I'd like to jump on one of these. Might finally get the visible red beam I've been shooting for for a while. And yes, this is pretty much dead on 50% of the cost of diodes I've spec'd elsewhere (and I'll add, elsewhere in more frustrating packages than 5.6mm)

How do I make this happen? And can they confirm by providing a final spec sheet for the diode they are selling?

I'd be willing to put together a small GB, as long as I'm not violating their T&C (I'll have to read it in detail when I have a spare moment). If we could put an order together for 10 units they would be $369.88 each plus shipping. I'm certainly in for one or two.

Yes I will ask them for a final spec sheet.

I'm in for one, presuming this can happen with roughly the details (price/spec) we have so far, and on a decent timeline.

Sounds good, let's wait until I receive the PI and spec sheet before proceeding.

Spec sheet PDF received. If you PM an email address I'll forward it.

They said that the price point for this diode will not be less than $50 regardless of quantity (I asked a specific question). Also, they said that if price was an issue they have a 300mW diode that would be $143 each in 500 unit quantity.

The PI will likely come on Tuesday.

$143 for a 300mW isn't bad at all, though getting enough people interested to meet a 500 piece group buy would likely be next to impossible here. And I don't have $72k handy myself. heh.

I'm in for the 500mW

Out of curiosity though, what would the single diode price on the 300mW be ?

I'll ask, but I'd guess around $170 based on the pricing for the 500mW.

BTW rhd, using your relative brightness calculator a 500mW 638nm would have 73% of the beam brightness of a 1W 445nm. At 632nm (the lower end of the spec) they're nearly identical. :)

A lot of people argue that these lower wavelength reds should always be assumed to hit the upper end of their ranges when driven at high currents.

Frankly, my experience with the HL63133DG has been that it is consistently +/- 1nm from it's average (spec sheet) mid-point wavelength. I suspect that this is why they call it the average, and not a "pie in the sky dream".

The bad news - I don't think you could ever expect this to hit 632nm.

The good news - 638nm is a great wavelength for it to lase at.

With my tool, you can put in a "?" for the second mW power, and it will fill in the blank to find an equivalent power. This is my favourite way to use the tool. So, some comparisons:

= 518 or 737 mW of BLUE (depending on which dataset you tell the calculator to use)
Beam: (638nm 500mw) vs. (445nm 737.53mw)
Beam: (638nm 500mw) vs. (445nm 518.47mw) (ChromaCompat mode enabled)

= 51 mW of GREEN
Beam: (638nm 500mw) vs. (532nm 51.46mw)

= 1,557 mW of typical (LOC, etc) RED
Beam: (638nm 500mw) vs. (658nm 1577.72mw)

hmm. I'm somewhat interested. I agree that 500 qty will never happen here. Any way to get more info on the beam profile of these?

The 500mW diodes are 7.5/35 - slightly worse than our 445s at 11/40 or 12/40, or whatever they are. But still not too bad.
