Yeah but you wouldn't buy a gun without a safety or one without a trigger that automatically fired every time you put bullets in it would you?

It's basically the same thing, all the FDA cares about is that the laser has all the correct safety features, which really isn't too big of a deal. Just as guns are allowed to be sold an manufactured as long as they have the correct safety features.

As far as I know, class 3B laser pointers need:

Aperture shutter
Emission delay of 3 seconds or more
Emission indicator
interlock
Keyswitch

That really doesn't seem like too much to ask for. And, if you work with them you can usually skate by on one or two of those. Look at the pointers sold by Viasho (also known as "RPLs"). They only have the key-switch, emission indicator and aperture shutter and they were still granted an accession number.

I would buy a guy without a safety and I have one a .38 special. The reason is because I keep it unloaded unless it will be used. The level of caution must be very high.
I am capable of handling my own safety. I will grant you unobtrusive safety features are fine in guns. Guns do not have a keyswitch, and you can't lose the key to a gun and then not be able to use it. That's my main issue; that a key switch needed in a laser. Espeically when the laser can't be used without the key. A dial would make more sense.

Every other feature I agree just to be clear. The safety that requires a grounding plug be put in is going overboard as well. Otherwise I agree those safely measure are reasonable. For the record I actually like the safety features myself for extremely high powered lasers. The light indicator is useful as well as the apture shutter.

I'd agree for a professional manufactor it isn't much to ask for at all. For us hobbyist though would we even get a number to sell if a host with those features could be added?

Personally I would be fine seeing Diode_Virgin get a ban. I really dont care if you invented lasers, in my opinion you are a bad influence in the forums.

To quote Mr. King (was it Martin Luther Jr. or Rodney?): Can't we all just get along?

People say some dumb things (myself first and foremost among that group), but that doesn't necessitate the conversational equivalent of ripping their arm off and beating them with the bloody end. (and that's not an attack on you D_V, so don't rip out my eyeballs and wee on my brain)

People are just getting bent way out of shape over things that would best be ignored or politely reprimanded.

The worst part is that a lot of this animosity is coming from the most honorable of intentions: wanting to educate and help people. When we see someone spout off ill-advised suggestions to someone we like, we get defensive -- it's only natural. But we also have to realize that Moh is not so dense that he would blindly follow the advice of some schmoe he doesn't know from Adam; likewise, the other people on this forum should have enough common sense to tell who knows what they're talking about and who's just spouting off poorly-drawn opinions -- and if they don't, then no amount of in-fighting is going to help them (they'll eventually follow the advice of someone who tells them to put their head in a microwave to get themselves a tan and be out of everyone's hair).

So, to those of you who have actually spent time on trying to sagely advise and educate: thank you.
We can all learn a lot from this thread -- unfortunately we also have to sift through a lot of bullshit to get to it.

Here is one of the reasons why the increased tension is happening

OK, I said I am gonna go away. I am.

BYE NOW.

Steve

Steve, thanks for visiting and for the helpful info.

Your link seems to have gotten mangled. Here it is in full

It explains a lot.

I can also see why you don't want to stick around.

if it is that important to you...start a poll

frothy left because of people not listening to him on topics he has mastered, in my years I have mastered a few also, when trying to educate others on topics you have mastered and they come back with INACCURATE information, your frustration hits a boiling point.

So go ahead get all of the popularity contest winners together and ban me (and or frustrate others so that they leave), and soon you will all have a forum of popular people doing things wrong.

I see exactly why frothy left, and frankly I dont blame him one bit...What bus did he get on?

^Yeah, but the difference between you and Frothy is that Frothy will be missed. He always would take the time to patiently lay things out for people, so whether or not they listened and took his knowledge to heart was up to them. He wrote pages of detailed information all for the sake of the forum, and for the sake of all of our safety. Frothy NEVER resorted to outright belittling (except possibly in his final post, out of frustration). You on the other hand.. don't let that bus door hit you..

you are wise beyond your avitar. if you have a day to kill, go back to the thread where the phone call happened and i told him right there, there is NO way around it, and look how far it progressed...WHY, because he chose to ignore and do the website, call it a kit, and do everything in his power to avoid the issue or skirt the issue, and that is EXACTLY the reason he is in the pile he is in today...WHY??? because he thought he could be the guy to find the loophole. Frothy told him and I told him. Others were chiming in wit BAD ADVICE, phone call, it was fake and blah blah blah. What ev, I can lurk an get all the information I need and snicker when I see the house of cards fall, because there is no foundation.

Dont you have fries to get out of the grease or something?

I start patiently but my fuse is shorter than his, we are all different and we all didnt go to the McDonalds middle management seminar, we are not all cut out to be in YOUR mold, YOU are not the standard so STOP trying to make everyone fit into your little mold.

I support you getting banned not because you post unpopular content or opinions but that you resort to personal attacks.

Are you really serious???? do you even read this forum??? I called ONE GUY and idiot and another guy a TROLL. Do I need to spend countless hours copy pasta every personnel insult that I have read from others...NO i will not waste my time doing that.

^Let's not forget the last few posts and all the things you've called me. I feel honored to be your special project. Please continue..

you are an easy target, because you think you have the Patent on Morality, a bit POMPOUS. ... i think you also called me socially inept...RICHARD...so you resort to name calling also. WOW almost 3700 views of this thread...I wonder how many are here for accurate information or DRAMA.

This thread really has turned into a gang brawl. Laserman, enough about the middle-management (EDIT: And "Richard") jokes! Elektro, please take your argument to PMs! This thread was discussing the legal issues that Matt is facing - please have the decency to keep it on topic.

On a side note, I have taken this thread's advice to heart and will not be selling any laser electronics to the US, until I have fully researched the laser laws and regulations governing their sale. Does anyone have REFUTABLE and VERIFIABLE advice about selling diodes alone?
