Certified Metallic Components using Electron Beam Melting

Wow... That's really impressive technology! And it's as good as forging you say? Very nice!

Strangely, why is it that electron beams can't achieve the same precision as laser? Isn't optics more limited in resolution (you know, like we use electron microscopes for small things that even light microscopes can't resolve). You've got me really interested in the physics and engineering behind this! :p

+1 to you sir. I've been seriously considering looking into getting whatever schooling I need to get in this field while it is still young.

To be fair our machines aren't brand new and there are new versions of it now. I can only imagine that they've gotten better. I work at a small place with about six people and its fantastic; on the flip side my buddy works in San Francisco at one of the biggest companies in this industry. They primarily deal with plastics though.

IMO if you are interested in the field look into some drafting courses. Specifically for 3dsMax, autocad, solidworks etc. There is always a high demand for good designers. There are of course other ways to get into the field but if you're good on a PC then its a thought

This is just amazing! and if you can make a host with the 3d printer that would be very cool!

Willis, a host would be very simple. The question is how crazy can we make it.. gotta use your imagination

Yeah I use to be big in cad back in high school but am quite rusty. Just got a cad torrent and need to get back up to day. But I know there are some one here that are very skilled!

Before I go and learn AutoCAD, how much do you think this would cost?

How much would it cost to have you fabricate a 3D design? *of a laser host*

I would not be the one to do it. I could but it's not my forte'. If you were to pay someone to design you a host in CAD well, I'm not sure. Our customers supply the files, we do not create them. My friend would be able to do something like that easily. You would have to ask someone to give you a quote

I think he meant that if he'd provide you a file, how much would it cost for you guys to fabricaste the design? Any rough estimates? Maybe you can use an existing host for an estimate (even though it's not very interesting) so that everyone can get a figure to work with.

I have a feeling this is gonna cost quite a bit.... Titanium after all, gosh... But "it will look real nice when it's done"! (to quote the Chinese Dozer in C&C Generals)

To be clear, I am not here to try and sell parts. I just wanted to share what I do. At the same time, if I were to throw the file into an existing build and work some magic with the boss.. I couldn't see it being less than $100.

It is an expensive technology but the way to maximize cost effectiveness is to build many, that would drive cost down a lot. I wouldn't build just one host by itself, the leftover real estate in the build space is valuable. I will have to see if my friend in SF can come up with something really nice. If I had a truly awesome file for a host, I would make 20-30 at once and I would buy them for "myself" (much cheaper since I'm doing all the labor lol). The cool thing is all 20-30 of them could be unique/customized.

In all honesty a host is so simple it is almost not worth it. On the other hand, who do you know that has a Titanium 3D printed laser?

that looks great! try heat anodizing them with a torch. ;)

if someone want a part done and there's other interest in the same part, I can help with the purchase price. I've been needing laser parts on my store!
