Build/Review of Orginial Cypreus II 638nm 1W: Now Complete!!!

@adambowker: You can get springs from HERE.

@Minamoto Kobayashi: The heatsink WAS a pressfit. Wasn't supposed to be but the tolerance wasn't quite enough to permit a diode module without the use of a C-Clamp. I was able to slide a few millimeters in but nothing after that.

I appreciate the condolences. I have killed diodes before, but this is the first time I have had a host die. I am done with pressfit hosts now. With the exception of my old MS-SSW, all the pressfit hosts I have had have incurred issues. My two MS-V4's warped the threads in my diode modules, and now this host bent.

yeah i had an issue with warped lens threads, otherwise i love pressfit hosts :) Major downside is there's no going back once its in. Sorry for your loss, i havent yet to experience a loss and i'm not looking forwards to the inevitable.

Sounds like a bad trip. BUT i reckon you could get a piece of steel rod that just fits inside the host, maybe even an extension bar from a socket set and slowly bit by bit slide it in and straighten it! Hey man its a nice looking host and worth a try!

I got mine from DTR. Bought a whole lot of diodes at once and just asked he tack a contact board and spring on.

Man that really sucks!!!!! Sorry to hear that the diode and the host was lost.
I would try straighten the host with a steel or brass rod. Work at it slowly and
be patient. You have everything to gain if its works. Maybe sinner can chime in
and offer his expertise.

After I ruined a copper pefits started d really using the Dremel to widen the press fit opening to the point I only had to apply enough pressure to hold the diode in. I do plan to build one of these, and your loss will really help me.

Thanks for sharing, so others may benefit.

For the extent of beta testing done on this host the least I can do is fix it for you, Let me know if there is anything I can do. Also If you're interested I can send one of the newer ones I am making , I will pay for the diode that was lost during the build and we can do a giveaway I hope we can all appreciate the sacrifices of this host.

Thanks for the review and pics. Really sorry it turned out the way it did. +1 to sinner for offering his help. Hope this has a happy ending.

I appreciate you offer, however the diode dying was a luck of the draw issue, and nothing remotely to do with the host. I will probably just try to sell the bent host at a discount so that someone can get a laser for less than they would typically have to pay. There are always going to be losses in this hobby and I have come to terms with that. I was a little in shock when I originally got the news, but anyone who knows me can tell you that I am "perpetually optimistic." I won't dwell so much on the loss as be happy that I got some cool pictures out of it.

Count Dooku Laser anyone? :P Reppin dat bent style.

PS - There will be a 300mW Mitsu Diode replacing the P73, so while it wont be as powerful, I look forward to an improved wavelength with the lower current settings.

EDIT: was going to +3 you but can't yet. :/

This kind of stuff usually goes to my "hall of fame/shame" ;) Keeps me motivated.

sorry to hear....Nothing worse than killing a laser, be it diode, host, driver, or whatever. I have now killed 2 diodes and a driver, but not a host- I agree that press fit hosts are NOT the way to go. I have shied away from several hosts simply due to the fact that they are press fit. I am a little scared of trying to press a module into the single 10440 sinner pen i got, but the host is pretty solid, and short, so bending it shouldnt be an issue. I also just put together a 445 in a flashlight i had Jeff make a heatsink for, and said heatsink was a very tight press fit into the host- incredible for thermal contact, but a straight up whore to remove. I had an error in my wiring an dhad to pull it out with pliers to avoid breaking off contacts on the driver, which resulted in dinging up the top of the heatsink a bit. All in all, im not a big fan of press fits- Jess heatsink was fine though, i can get out the damage with some buffing and sanding, but hosts that require you to press the actual modules in are a no-go for me from now on.

Wow. +rep for sure Sinner.....Its one thing that you make amazing hosts, but its a whole different thing that you will go the extra mile (or in this case, extra 10 miles!) to backup your product and stand by it, to provide customer satisfaction. Really amazing! Major props to you, sir!

It is a great looking build

But sometimes problems like this occur for no reason.

I am really sorry for the loss ... As said here ^^ it is very painful to break a laser sometimes ...

I have killed 2 S06J diodes two weeks ago. And a M140 diode about a week ago.

It happens ... and we should just move on

Hopefully it will not happen again :)

Damn wbs you beat me to the count dooku reference... +1(when I can)
That is seriously all I can see when I look at these pics.
