Bitcoin

I just used that site. I didn't even bother downloading the program. It shows it in the upper right.

Do you use bitcoin regularly, Benm? :)

I use it to pay for web hosting, domains and my VPN myself. Also various things on for example bitmit.net.

I use them from time to time, in cases where the 'brown bag of cash' effect is wanted mostly.

As fas as mining them: That can be profitable if you have access to very cheap electricity. In most cases running a mining rig made out of gpu's will cost you more in power bills then it delivers in bitcoin. If your electricity price is under $0.05/kWh you could start to consider it.

Some of those GPU rigs are huge. Other people are buying up ASICs and FPGAs to do it. Some people even use their botnets for mining (where I first learned about bitcoins). I guess it's worth it if you can really churn out coins.

It appears 4chan now accepts bitcoin as payment! And reddit says it's on their wishlist as well. We've been seeing a lot of adoption lately. Avery, how about a LPF bitcoin donation address? :)

Big thanks to grix for sending me 0.5 BTC! :D

I also managed to get another 0.00133 BTC for looking at some ads. Definitely not worth it. Probably spent more money in electricity for the computer than I got from those ads.

Grix im wondering, how long have you been using bitcoin? Also what was the value of a bitcoin then?

I first heard of it in March last year. The price then was 85 cents for a bitcoin. Boy do I wish I had invested properly back then, I would be rich by now :p
But I had simply never thought it would get this big (and the popularity is still growing exponentially)

The price of bitcoins have increase quite a lot lately, each one is now worth over $18, a ~40% rise since this thread was created.

Yeah I'm hoping for a crash before I really go and buy some ... $18/coin is a bit much at the moment :(

The market's buying pressure continues to push the price higher.

I've been in the market since the dollar parity and subsequent slump to $0.60/BTC.

Jesus christ, I don't know if you guys have been following this, but bitcoin has now shattered it's all-time high. There has been a 300% increase in price since the last post in this thread, and a 5-600% increase since the beginning of the thread. If any of you guys still have 0.5 bitcoin tips I handed out, they are now worth nearly $30.

Yeah, it's ridiculous  Though it really makes me wonder if it'll come crashing down again, though I don't know what would cause such a dive.

Well if your in with bitcoins its time to sell

@bionic badger oh it will come crashing down because its not backed by anything and once people realise that the sooner it will be abandoned.

Most currencies aren't backed by anything other than a promise -- which is fine, as that's what currencies are for. In that respect, BTC will survive as long as there is a use for it as a currency.

The only thing that'll kill BTC is if markets such as Silk Road go down, and that would require a concerted effort on part of law enforcement, not because BTC is any less backed than other currencies.
