ATTENTION!! Everybody needs to read this and take action NOW(New Bill/USA)

@danefex If we don't have a group that can be recognized by others we will not have a voice and will get banned you are correct

@danefex:

If everyone thought like that we would still be a British colony!

I know.. I'm sorry folks. As I previously said I don't mean to have that attitude. I'm on your side, I promise:)

I guess all we can do is keep encouraging education, safety & responsibility with the growing popularity and use of today's laser technology. In the end people will do what people will do when it comes to lasers, guns, crazy swords, electromagnetism, the jedi mind trick or evil magic... but I spose giving up on trying to prevent any of that isn't the answer.

BTW you don't have to use the @ symbol to reference me. I don't know if that's a twitter thing or not but I'm the only danefex here

the use of @ and ^^^ has been going on here for a log time- get used to it.

This thread is about stopping a proposed bill that would make using a laser outdoors illegal. If anyone does not want to help us stop it then just ignore this thread but dont bitch later when it is too late.

BTW sometimes while a post is being typed another person will post and then if @ is not used confusion can happen about who is responding to whom.

At least copypasta the letter and send it, that would, IMO, take less time than some of the above posts took and will do a lot more good- (no matter what country you may be from).

I'll send the mail with CC to the senate members. Anyone there had the list? I'm not from USA and I do not know where to search..
A list of emails would be greatly appreciated: here or in PM.

Hell yeah, I'll mass-mail some US senators too, if you give me the addresses.

I got this from the OP

but here it is again.

The ones IIRC who wrote this or are in a position to do the most good and thus need the most convincing that it is poorly wriiten and will not achieve the desired results-- Orrin Hatch and Lamar Smith.

send to to anybody that can read even Pres. Obama.

So far, pretty much, the only voices that can be heard out there are that of those who hate lasers and, by proxy, us laser hobbiest. And the 'horror' stories in the media.

  • You can find a list of Representatives at https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml. There is also a handy "Contact My Representative" form on this page. Ask them to not support H.R. 386 in its current form, since it has problems and can be improved as well.
  • You can find a list of House Judiciary Committee members at http://judiciary.house.gov/about/members.html. Be sure to write to Lamar Smith, the chairman. Also, if your Representative is on the Committee, be sure to write him or her and ask them to change H.R. 386 or vote against it.
  • You can find a list of Senators at http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm. Use the drop-down box to find the two Senators from your state. Important: At this time, there is only a House bill (H.R. 386). There is no Senate bill. Be clear to your Senator that you are asking them NOT to co-sponsor any Senate version of H.R. 386. Obviously they cannot vote against it until it comes to the Senate floor.
  • You can find a list of Senate Judiciary Committee members at http://judiciary.senate.gov/about/members.cfm. Be sure to write to Orrin G. Hatch, the chairman. Also, if either of the Senators from your state are on the Committee, be sure to write to them. See the note above, that there is no Senate version but one is expected soon, and that you are against any Senate version if it is identical to H.R. 386.
just pick any state and write the name you get back- hell write them ALL> CC is a beautiful thing!!

If the NRA did not exist IMO all guns would have been outlawed long ago--that, btw, is a debate for another time /another place-- its just an example.

We need a united voice or we are doomed. But in the meantime get off your duffs, put your pointers away and write/send a damn letter. Do it NOW!!

Also I personally am in favor of even more severe fines/jailtime for lasering aircraft/ vehicles and living things.

free bump.
I'm writing and doing some researches.

Damn, all forms request an address, zip code, city and such. I'm not from USA!
We need Avery's help, hak! He needs to sound an general alert to all in LPF!

See thats why we need to form a group because then internationally we can be apart of it and when things are done out side just 1 country (originations and such) it holds more power if we all were part of a world wide group for laser safety.

I am used to it Hak and it doesn't bother me or anything, I've just noticed over the last 6 months or so the @ symbol has become a regular thing to address people with everything on the interwebs & I was saying it wasn't necessary.

This thread is about stopping a proposed bill that would make using a laser outdoors illegal. If anyone does not want to help us stop it then just ignore this thread but dont bitch later when it is too late.
Indeed, I won't divert that point any more than I already have as well as bitch about something I couldn't control afterwards...

Indeed... I'm going to join along by taking the initiative to be proactive on this instead of reactive. I'll look up who to write today & address this as well :D

Couple of thoughts..

First, realistically I think there is no way a handful of people are going to make a bit of difference by themselves. You have no lobbying group. Wouldn't it be more prudent to align with an existing lobbying group or larger organization that might take some sympathy towards us? Im thinking interests that reflect or support outdoor enthusiasts, arborists, Astronomers, etc. as these (and Im sure many more) would have a vested interest in this bill.

^^^ did you read who penned the letter in the OP?

I think I will go with his suggestions -TY very much.

handful??
if only 10% of lpf wrote that would be a tad more than a handful IMO

Sorry, but I honestly don't know them. How powerful is that group? All the congress needs to do is label this as "Taking action to not blind our pilots bill" and I dont think enough of the public cares enough to protest otherwise.

*ILDA is afaik the only group that reps the lasershow industry, I am not a member yet but plan to join, and this is prolly the best time as, AFAIK, ILDA lacks the kinds of funds it take to do a battle like this. All the more reason that sending letters to any and all is so important*

All the congress needs to do is label this as "Taking action to not blind our pilots bill" and I dont think enough of the public cares enough to protest otherwise.

Which leaves the question 'do WE care enough to protest otherwise????'

This new bill has come about because of reckless use of handhelds. So when the hammer comes down , if you did nothing to make a change , you will have only yourselves to blame. The only posts I like to see here are the ones that say 'I have sent out emails and letters'.

We are all getting painted by the same brush. The fact that most of us are not to blame means squat. Its too late IMO to organize. Write TODAY or face the consequences tommorrow. I hope I am all wrong about this....but if I am right....once outdoor laser use is illegal, the incident reports will go WAY up and we will lose our rights to even own lasers. I dont see it happening any other way.

Writing in is a good idea and we all should do it I agree. But it's not going to help at this point if we don't have any origination thats supporting the safe use of them.

If we don't at least start to form a group we will not have a voice. We can write in tell your face is blue and some sectary will MAYBE read it. But unless there is a group of professionals that is in support of the safe use of them. We will have no Voice.

Send in a letter, it will help, but we need to ban together.

It's not the same thing I know, but it's the same idea behind it...Just like whats going on in Egypt. A bunch of people were "sending in letters and complaining A lot".
But it's not until all the people banned together and started showing force that they now get heard.

It's not the same I know but we do need to group together to be heard

EDIT: it wont hurt to try, you never know

I just want to call attention to the fact that we NEED to do more then just emailing congress. We need to make our presence know and we need to act now. There's much more we can do see my topic http://laserpointerforums.com/f44/w...ing-video-talks-about-laser-safety-60279.html This could be part of our group once we organize it and please I ask all of you to make an effort and consideration to get involved in this. Once they get banned they'll stay banned :(
