ATTENTION!! Everybody needs to read this and take action NOW(New Bill/USA)

Re: ATTENTION!! Everybody needs to read this and take action NOW

I agree we need someone to set up a organization. We need a code of conduct of lasers use. With the Internet we can get this going really fast we just need some people who has a little more knowledge that could write and get it going.

And we need to connect via e-mail wise if something like the site getting shut down

IMO buy stuff while you can from/to the US

Re: ATTENTION!! Everybody needs to read this and take action NOW

Any Emails sent will help- the one receiving them only counts how many and are they for or against the new bill. They AFAIK have no easy way to know WHERE the mail is sent from.

And PLEASE consider this- those who make thier living putting on the laser shows we all love so much will be the ones most affected.

and it will happen because of handhelds being used irresponsibly- not because of a laser shows. And that is very unfair.

I used to think there was no harm shining a pointer on someones back or on thier feet--or on random buildings etc-- now I see that doing this is not too smart if I want to keep owning handhelds. Out in the counrty, down at the beach, off in the woods--very little problems.

In the city, at a concert, around groups of people, basically anywhere someone MAY think you are being dangerous-- could be BIG problems-- and just because you dont get caught do not think that you have not done any damage to our 'hobby'.

If you allow someone else to 'play' with your laser then you are responsible for everything they do with it, just like passing off a weapon to someone.

Keep it safe or lose it.

Re: ATTENTION!! Everybody needs to read this and take action NOW

My two cents: If the hobby is going to represented by someone in the hobby you better make damn sure those representatives have never sold, imported or purchased a laser illegally. The representatives not only must have the necessary political eloquence but also a squeaky clean history. Credibility is an absolute must. Building lasers is one thing as there is nothing questionable about it. Purchasing lasers meeting FDA requirements is fine. Even parting something out for a laser (aka DNA analyzer) is alright. But, if there is even a hint of impropriety congress will disregard any attempt to sway them. Choose the leadership carefully. Even though ILDA does not represent the hobby (their charter is very specific), watch how fast that organization distances itself from a formal hobby organization if there is anything questionable.

Bring a power meter in and meter all the house reps' laser pointers :san:

For reasons I am not going to discuss, challenging any member of Congress to have their pointer measured is a damn bad idea right now.

You need to focus on the Senate, it is going to, or has, passed in the House.

Frothy has a point, you cannot be seen endorsing the Chinese Anything right now, unless you are a registered foreign lobbyist, in which case, your not going to be too welcome anyways.

Just in case anyone didn't know H.R.386 is the "Securing Aircraft Cockpits Against Lasers Act of 2011"

The ILDA version is much improved. Will probably avoid lots of needless litigaton if it gets adopted.

EDIT:

@Bobby:

HAUP - Hobbyists Against Unsafe Practices
HALA - Hobbyists Against Laser Abuse (this would read as: "The H-A-L-A")
HALM - Hobbyists Against Laser Misuse
HALS - Hobbyists Advocating Laser Safety

Just a to name a few possibilities, We should keep em at 4 letters for simplicity. First thing to do would be to vote on the name and then form social group on here with that name to see how many people would join, and then move on from there.

The 2nd one down is my choice. I like the 2nd one because it makes lasers seem like the victim-- they are getting abused by criminals, not lasers as something you need to be kept safe from.

Just a thought,

Sal

Sent letters to Senators Harry Reid and John Ensign of Nevada plus House Rep Dean Heller.

I like HALS and once we decide on the name and get our group formed we need to make a Facebook page with our group and spread media.

Please pardon my less than positive attitude towards this subject but, as with anything 'questionably safe' that becomes more popular or mainstream over time.... once problems from whatever the subject in question is becomes more prevalent, the system will naturally and obviously crack down with regulations, restrictions and eventually banishment. It's a repeated cycle that's normal with society and its ways.

As much as I'd love to join everyone who says FIGHT BACK against the irresponsible idiots that give our precious hobby and craft a bad name, unfortunately there's nothing we can do about it :undecided:

Lasereers Advocating Safety, Ethics, & Responsibility for our Skys
  1. We will not accept anyone pointing lasers at any human, animal, or occupied vehicle of any kind (especially aircraft)
  2. We desire the formalization of an "Amateur Laser Enthusiast" similar to Amature Radio Enthusiast (HAM) or Amateur Rocket Enthusiast
  3. ...
