Anti static mat and anti static wrist strap?






Already have one of them, but it doesn't stop the desk I'm working on getting staticfied (if that's even a word) :) Just something to put them on while I'm working on them ??
 
I got one of these for work ... its great, I stopped frying expensive custom FPGA boards once it was installed:

for my wrist strap i cut the female end from a PC power cord and attached my strap clip to the green wire. On the other end I removed the two plug blades leaving only the round one(ground) I plug this into a wall receptical. My wrist strap has a resistor built into it. When I remove it from my wrist I always leave it in the middle of my work area so I don't forget to use it every time.

So I have a belkin anti static wrist strap an you can just take the alligator clip off the end of it and plug it into the third prong(ground) in your wall socket?
 
Before anyone plugs themselves into the wall ground please please please use one of those socket tester things to make sure its wired correctly. I found a hot "ground" with one when looking for a place to ground a Faraday cage.

how would I test it? is it not dangerous to stick your meter in a live socket?
 
Set the meter on AC (most meters should go to ~750AC) go across the top 2 prongs, and you should have ~120ac. Then check the ground plug to the SMALLER of the 2 prongs, and you should have ~120ac. Now go across the ground to the wider prong, and you should have next to nothing. If any of these conditions is different DO NOT plug your wrist strap into the socket, and have an electrician check your wiring out.
