I find it hard to explain why I like them... mainly because there's so many things that are wicked about them I can't explain it in one sentence (Which is all the time that people are prepared to listen for)

Also I love opening parcels!! :P :P

Luckily, i'm an adult. I just say, "I do what I want, bitch!"
but don't tell my wife i said that....
 
Well... you could use something like this:

"A hobby is something you enjoy and are interested in. I enjoy and am interested in lasers."

But if the lack of respect has already descended to the level you've described, I'd probably respond with something to the tone of:

"If I wanted your opinion about this, I'd have asked for it."

And if it really descended far, it'd be appended with (excuse my French)

"Until then, fuck off."

Because really, if they're being asses like that, they don't deserve your tact or respect on that matter. Better to have them explicitly know that you don't want to even hear their inane thoughts than have them entertain some notion that what they're saying is of importance.
 
Some people don't care, sure. But usually all I have to say is... "Lasers, man. LASERS!"...

My grandfather and grandmother both used to work for Raytheon in Watertown/Newton Mass.. (My grandfather worked in microwave engineering; my grandmother made vacuum tubes. Additionally, my mother was a computer programmer for the DoD, working on UNIVAC and S/360; Tech is not a problem in my family :P ) -- These were people who knew their stuff, and were involved in stuff like the birth of Color TV and digital voice transmission.

Great thing about growing up in tech circles and even old-time technical people -- Everyone in the neighborhood knew eachother and they all had tons of interesting stories. And being basically "old nerds", they were all really quirky. I'd go out there for holidays, big block parties. At one point, one of my grandmother's old lady friends who also worked with them, I think also in the thermionic/vacuum tube departments, back in the day, managed to bring home a (unfortunately nonfunctional at that point) ruby laser from some other retiree's house. I believe it was an estate sale - the old guy had died. (Garage and estate sales around Raytheon were... epic.) She plonked the contraption on the table; I don't know if it could have been repaired, and I wish I had talked her into letting me have it. :) But;

I remember it was, "Anne, what are you doing with that thing? Why did you bring that home?" -- 80 year old Italian woman replies, incredulously, as if she was befuddled as to why anyone would ask her such a question: "Bob.. it's a laser! You see a laser there, what are you going to do, just leave it? Oh, it's just a laser, I'll pass? I'll take the doilies, but you can keep the laser? Come on Bob, Who the hell doesn't want a laser?!"

Her husband just took a sip of his beer and shuffled off into another room.

So yeah. If it was good enough for Octogenarian Anne, it's a damn well good enough reason for anyone else. So that's my answer to people.

"It's a laser. Who the hell doesn't want a laser?!"

P.S.; it could be said that Edison, Tesla, Bell and Marconi also had "hobbies". Likely ones that people thought were ridiculous at the time.

My own family and friends encourage laser-hobby like behavior, finding it neat that I'm interested in such things (as any sane-minded person should!). Unfortunately, there are some people, families, friends, strangers, who somehow don't get it through their thick skulls that everybody has unique interests--be they lasers, fast cars, video games, programming, knitting, scrapbooking, stamp collecting, Magic cards, Red Rose Tea porcelain figurines, Warhammer 40k, wardriving, HAM radio, model airplanes, jewelry making, engraving, stoneworking, antique collecting, photography, manga, astronomy, pottery, gardening, sewing, etc.--that others may simply not see the value in.

Even more unfortunate, there are people who would seek to dissuade others from pursuing their interest in some narrow-minded belief that the things they find interesting can be the only things that are interesting. Often these people who ridicule others in such a manner are simply insecure. Other times they're just ignorant, or stupid, or just stubborn. The end-result is the same nonetheless: resentment builds, and they will soon find themselves very isolated from those they ridicule. It's sad.

So Misanthrop: don't let the naysayers get you down, and there may be some casualties in your relationships between your lasers and the people you know.

I suggest never showing anyone with doubts about the 'hobby' the burning ability of ANY laser.
You only reinforces the negative aspects. Instead built a simple two motor spyro and put on some music that THEY like and show them that.
Do the same with simple lumia efx.

But if they are aready think its too dangerous,.. its stupid to burn tape-pop ballons or light a 'ciggie' with it. But as smoking is also stupid .... maybe you should get another hobby.
