What the F is it with parents and sisters against my hobby? Anyone else have this problem?

"I hope you know what your doing"
"Why are you >PLAYING< with these lasers"
"The label emits radiation? you know that means it leaks radiation"< LOL
"Your gonna mess your eyes up!" (I have glasses)
"I'm going to throw them in the bin"
"There boring, why do you waste your money?"

Etc.. etc. et-f**king-cetera

You know? sorry for liking something you don't understand!

Discuss.

MANY people simply do not get the hobby... or inevitably start asking "what do you do with a laser?"

My de-facto response is, "If you have to ask, you don't get it."

Bottom line is, it's a hobby, it doesn't have to make any sense.

If people are annoying, start questioning their hobbies... or better yet, why they don't have any;)

My family isn't interested in lasers but they aren't bothered by them either. As long as I am not doing anything dangerous they are fine with it, and are even interested in the pictures I take of my lasers every so often.

Half the people dont get it.
The other half kinda get it until your running a late night service call on a pitch black roof.
I asked the maint guy if he had any hobbies, he named a few, i asked if hes ever seen a laser pointer.
Yep, didnt interest him.
I pulled out a 4oo mw greenie and pointed it into the sky,,,,i almost didnt get my laser back.
I used to think some hobbies were dum, in the end, everyone has a hobby, even if its being a dick about someone elses hobby.

Looking from the outside in, it is pretty easy to see why most people don't get lasers, but I feel it is pretty much the same with any niche hobby. Like somedude said, people usually say "oh, so your into laser pointers, cool?" and just write off laser pointers as the green and red presentation aids that they are accustomed to. Although, I have seen many reversals of attitude and opinion when those same people see a crisp colorful beam split the sky in two. :tinfoil:

You pretty much learn quite a few skills just putting together your first laser. It's all about the learning experiences.

^ Indeed. I learned everything I know about electronics, even venturing into HV stuff for a CO2 I am building, because I wanted to be able to do everything from scratch. It is for this reason that I now know how to work a lathe, a milling machine, high-voltage transformers, soldering, electronic engineering, etc.

:D

^ I think it will be a good amount of time before I reach that point. I'm just getting to the lathe :p

Turning on the lathe is pretty easy, and most of the stuff we do with lasers here is either turning or creating threads with a tap/die set, both of which are pretty easy.

Well, Lasers make some people go crazy, other not.

For me, when I first saw a visible laser beam, I was amazed. I showed my friends and they didn't care, but I saw still in awe.

They still don't understand my obsession, but seeing beams of light cut through the air is the most beautiful thing ever to me. (That's why i'm now hooked on projectors :D)
