Active cooling in a handheld using a fan

I ran across small dc fans (0.5"x0.5"x0.25) in some CNC controllers and they might work great in flashlight sized hosts. I hope to lock down a vendor and price next week. You interested?

They look like normal every day little box fans except they are damn tiny. I hope the won't be expensive, but if they are a special part with low volume manufacturing.....well that's not cheap....

Small is beautiful in my eyes and those 20mm ones still come into, "too big for a handheld", territory for me.

The 5-9V is a bit of an obstacle but I guess they'd run on 3.7V, just not to capacity. I wouldn't want to be putting a driver in just for a fan!

I'd still be in for one or two of those 20mms anyway as I have a need...

those would be about the right size. they are $20ea, not sure if we can find a lower price. I'll see what I can come up with, but it probably won't be any cheaper.

Very nice find Uranium. At close to $20, it's an expensive do-hickey but might be worth a punt for sh*ts and giggles.

The third wire (yellow) is for when it's used in a computer.

It's the tachometer pin. It allows the motherboard and BIOS to monitor the fan's RPM.

Anyway, I just found my 5000rpm mini fan. I forgot how loud they were!

well seeing those 20mm fans are great and if one was willing to cut them up a little i am sure you could get them to be around 15mm removing the outer ring, then its just a matter of gluing it to your heatsink and presto a super small fan cooled laser.
although at 20 mm and a bit of rounding the corners it would fit a good 1in heatsink
although for my personal one if i remember the inside is around 1.25 in so a 30mm fan might be better going to watch this.
