6x Blu

Re: 4x Blu

I lit a sharpied match instantly at 12" using 80 mA --52 mW. At 120 mA, it will smoke your hide ;D
My mA vs Po graph is almost identical to DrLava's graph. Slight differences in readings is most likely do to equipment correlation.
My Aixiz style module doesn't even feel warm.

Way to go Mike! I am very jealous of you guys with your blu-ray diodes that are more then twice as powerful as mine! Lol... However, I am very happy with over 60mW of blu-ray! I am also happy to see the results of your testing! We all learned a lot from these builds. I am especially happy to know now, that I can put these diodes in my MXDL host using the 3 X AAA sized 10440 batteries and a DDL style driver! It's an excellent host for one of these diodes. I will be watching for the price to come down on that drive you guys got there. I want your diode, in my host! Just change the labeling...

Re: 4x Blu

Very cool! Hope this starts breaking new grounds for higher powered violet lasers. Cause the more we know about it, the easier it would be for me to pay somebody to make one for me :)

But wow, thats a lotta power for a violet. And since the beam of a violet can be focused more than any laser above it, the burning power is double or more than a green at the same mW rating.

Leuk --
The idea of posting this info is so YOU can build a laser -- That's part of the hobby.

I know, but I suck at these kinda of things. Unless I got some step by step instruction manual telling me exactly what I need to buy, what all the 'terms' mean, and all that jazz. I just cant see myself managing to do it. I wouldn't want to risk $400 or more on a burner diode just to fry it out by accident.

And unless there was some cheap $5 violet diodes I could buy somewhere and experiment on, then the risk is too much. Even a PS3 sled at about $65 a pop would be too much risk for me.

Re: 4x Blu

I got my drive from Overclockers.UK --- Ten days to receive it. I think DrLava got his the same place. A bit pricey now but the price should come down with all the "new Obsolete" drives out there.

Leuk -- Never underestimate your abilities. I've seen members here who I thought couldn't learn ohms law make some really nice pointers and laser shows. I quietly ate my crow :D
This is a fun hobby and the more you know, the more fun and satisfaction.

Re: 4x Blu

I'm sure your correct, but I am no mechanical man. I jerry-rig everything I have that needs fixing. And I mean really jerry-rigging them.

I would rather buy one as a consumer, then try to learn it. I don't have the knowledge, nor the tools to do all this stuff. Now when it comes to computers, I can learn, and learn very fast. Years ago, I went from total noob at cell phone modding, to designing my own monsterpacks and releasing custom firmware in maybe a week.

Re: 4x Blu

Wow, excellent work. I'm jealous of the 100mW bluray. Just seems like a waste needing to order the entire drive to get the diode.

One area that might need work, the optics. Looks like most people are using AixiZ or Meredith optics, which are tuned for red lasers. A different lens - with different curves and coatings? - may be necessary to get a tight focus. I'm assuming the focused diode is some sort of oval like with the red ones (?)

Can you see speckle around the glow of the dot, like when you shine it into the corner of the ceiling?

Hopefully I will be able to get enough $$$ to build one of these by this summer.. anyway, gives the prices a chance to go down more.

Re: 4x Blu

Hey Lava, have you shined that thing long distances yet? Like outside at night. :) Whats the divergence on it?

Re: 4x Blu

Flogged --

I forgot to look for the speckle. I'll go look....... Well I looked. 8-)

The speckle is so fine it's almost not there. As for focus, I'm using a DX module and the blue beam focuses to a pin point. That's why it lights matches with only 50 mW.

Remember when the only big REDs had to be harvested ?? Shouldn't be too long until someone gets a GB on these or better.

Re: 4x Blu

I'll check the divergence tonight. Also, I have a feeling that, like the reds, burners will be the most inexpensive source of these diodes for some time.

Re: 4x Blu

I just hope we start seeing some $100 or less burners soon :D Easily within the year that will happen. Seeing as how the prices of these types of things drop so quickly nowadays.

Re: 4x Blu

A price drop MAY occur because of the Toshiba drop out. Lets hope so. Red LD's dropped quickly too.

Re: 4x Blu

Well, now that the HD war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD is over a lot of people think prices will end up going up. I don't believe this. Because now instead of Toshiba and Sony going head to head, now its all the companies making BD players will be fighting over who has the better price. And prices will drop this way.

We are bound to see one of those crappy burners hit the market (like some off-brand no-name company) and they are going to be cheeeap! they may be horrible burners with bad software and may end up breaking a lot...but the laser modding community doesn't care about that. They just want the diodes!

Cheap no-name brand burners FTW!
