I would much prefer to use such lens nuts. Because otherwise, i will have to cut open every single one by myself, and it doesn't always come out pretty.. Functional, yeah, but pretty, no.. I think the best would be to drill them open instead. I would also feel bad about discarding the AR coated lenses, because they are very good for reds.
I still didn't get the third aspheric lens. I would definitelly like to test that one too.
But if they don't do something soon, i think i'll go with these. It's the highest transmittance material anyway, it's just about FLs and distortion properties now.

You offer to do too much. If the backs need to be cut out, the buyers can do that or you can do it on an "as needed" basis.

You can always sell the "discarded" lenses on eBay.

Yeah.. It's too bad actually.. This lens looks like the dilda lens. The Dilda also only has a retaining ring in the back with no plate obstructing light, just like in the pictures.

I use a tiny lathe to "chuck-up" my lens-holder and then just touch the face where I want to cut it with a hobby-knife while it is spinning, it comes right off and looks perfect. There is a little gap between the lens and the nut you are cutting, so it is not too hard to keep from poking through and scratching the lens, just be carefull. Someone without the little-lathe could probably just place the lens into a drill-druck and do the same thing, keeps everything centered and no "clean-up". But I also agree with Dave, you could just let the customers do it too, or as needed.

Well, the retaining ring is much more important here, than with acrylics..

With acrylics i just pull the entire back part out, and discard it (well, latelly i save them, cos i'll need spares soon ). The lens stays in the nut by itself, due to the wide edge.

But the glass lenses will not have such an edge. They are completelly different, as you saw in the picture. With these, a tiny rubber o-ring is required to support the front face, and the retaining ring to hold the lens in, and keep it at the perfect angle.

This ring also rests directly on the back side of the lens, so any cutting of the back with the lens inside, would be MUCH more dangerous. The lens would get scratched for sure. Even just pulling the ring out could be dangerous for the same reason - the back of the lens is flat, so you can't stick anything between the ring and the lens, without touching the lens.


But i just tried opening them up in a different way, with a machine, and it came out much nicer, while being faster at the same time. So it's all good.

ok, I'm trying to clarify something here. I know it's been said numerous times in a round about way but nothing so clear to clear up my confusion. You've indicated that the lens fits into a traditional nut from an aixiz acrylic. That the diameter of the lens is 7mm. Yet you are needing to use a o-ring in the top before the lens and then the basic retainer plastic peice we usually widen to hold it in. Is this a correct assesment and if it is, why will not the lens just pop all the way into the end of the aixiz nut without the o-ring?

The first lens was made to fit into the AixiZ lens nut. But the o-ring (for support) and the retaining (to keep it in) were a part of the plan from the start... I've had the required o-rings for over a month now. Scopeguy found the right size, and sent them to me.

But at the moment i have three different lenses here. The first, spherical lens, that was custom made to fit, and two aspheric samples, which a second manufacturer sent to me for testing. One of the two aspheric lenses is 6.8mm and doesn't work for some strange reason (it projects the same distortions as the spherical lens), and the second aspheric lens is 7.8mm, so it's a little too big, but this one works. It's the best lens so far.

The 7.8mm lens has a useless (for us - originally intended for mounting) rim all around, that can be reduced, so that it has 7mm dia, and fit in the AixiZ lens nuts.


Unlike the acrylics, these lenses are just plain lenses (look at the pics), and don't have a front extending rim, that would support the front face of the lens in the nut. Hence, the o-ring.

If the lens was allowed to just drop into the nut, it would land with the front face on the apperture, the bulged front would stick out, and it would be too far from the diode, to get a parallel focus, no matter how deep you screwed it in.. Even more so with the slightly shorter focal length.


Glass lenses can not be made to the same shape as acrylics (rim shape), so they require a different mounting method. But i already tested this mounting method, and it works like intended.

Indeed.. I never had a clue how many important factors there are with lenses.  

Mounting is the least of of it all. But centering and the right angle are also very important, if you don't want the beam to shoot out at an angle..

so, here's the kicker... If you sell the lenses in a nut (in a shell (bad joke about all put together)) will you include said o-ring? Obviously your going to have to outsource those as well, since the doggone aixiz modules don't come with them. Having run a GB and trying to include all the bells and whistles, I understand that throwing something together to do the job right, is an expensive affair. I don't wanna see you throwing away your hard earned money doing this though. As with most of us, we don't object to paying a little more money to make sure that your not in the -.

Well, if the lenses come in a nut, of course i will mount them like they're supposed to be mounted.
A lens in a lens nut is supposed to be ready to use. It wouldn't make sense, if the buyer would have to take it appart, find an obscure o-ring and put it all back together again.

That's why Scopeguy sent me so many of those tiny o-rings. But i'm gonna have to ask him for more of them, it would seem. They are not expensive tho..


If someone would choose to order just the lens instead, they would get the lens and the o-rings, and then they would have to follow instructions for assembly. At least that's how i imagined it. But in any case, all the required parts would be included.


But at 200 lenses, it would really take me a LONG time to assemble them all. It might actually be better to order custom lens nuts as well. I need to ask for the price of that.

The manufacturer wants me to send them a drawing of the required lens nuts. First i have to figure out the exact depth at which the lens has to be for proper focus..

With regard to the amount of labor he is doing for the community, he is, without a doubt, the hardest "working" member of this community. I am amazed he finds the time to do all he has done /does do for us.
