JakeGT,

But have you tested your laser to be sure the driver is only putting out an actual 500mA? 820mW is a very high reading for .5A, and I would be inclined to believe the driver is actually pushing more amperage than that.

An actual plot of the diode provides the valuable data desirable for mass experiments such as these. If you would be willing to do that with your meter it would be great.

DTR set the driver for me like i requested to 500mA, unless he's lying, which I highly doubt. I very much believe it is 500mA. Ill ask DTR to clarify it is in fact set at 500mA

In an experiment, using past second hand data isn't a good way to preserve current results. He may have very well set it at 500mA, and it could very well be at 540mA via unknown variables now. The reading basically hints at this possibility. A plot shows the two variables tested at the same time as one another.

I'm sorry to bring it up on your post, but I just think if we are all doing this, we should at least try to provide the most accurate data we can.

I just don't really feel like taking it all apart, I just got it today, so from DTR to me if it got bumped up by the shipping then i don't know, but I'm not taking it apart to find out.

It was within a couple mA of 500 when I set it but the pot is sensitive and anything could happen. I have one set to 500mA that does 801mW with a G-1. Morgans tests on this diode gave 767mW @ 500mA so 820mW is 6% more efficient which is not a small amount but it is also possible.:)

S06J diode is something else!

put me down for Groove 2 driver set to 550mA outputting 740mW with Aixiz 405 lens.

ultra happy !!

Nice to see you again, Milos.

Yeah. People are pushing this one more toward the "top" of the previous range. It appears to be more efficient as well.

Peace,
dave

Thanks buddy, as always good to be around!

yes, i have feeling this S06J is pushable, kinda like phrs were,

right now i'm limited with groove 2 driver (600mA max) as much as with two 10440s in series. Also, i'm sure i'd be reading 800mW if i put better lens.

Hi
to DTR, or anyone ready for next push.

Has anyone reached 1W with 12xs ? I'm going to order one and see for myself with S06J.

I pushed a Lite-On 12X to 900mW @ 700mA during a test but I don't think It would last long @ that level. Also Hemlock Mike said he had a Lite-On hit 1W but I think it died soon after.

Now these new S06J's may be a little tougher. I have two of them here and would not mind sacrificing one to research. I might be willing to run it @ 700mA to see how long it will survive. If my other was 800mW @ 500mA It may reach 1W @ 700mA but I am not sure what the efficiency drop is past 500mA. But I am sure there will be a point before 700mA that you start seeing diminished returns.

hi DTR,

I am very surpprised at this diode, as well as Groove 2 driver. Maybe i read something wrong while back but I feel like i'm getting more than advertised :-) , or at least i have gut feeling i will get it soon.

basically, with Aixiz 405nm lens I'm getting 740mW with fresh batteries ( two 10440s in series) at max setting. I'm reading about 603mA draw at very beginning with fresh batteries which kick in with good 8.4-8.5V, After few minutes they are about 8V and I stil get solid 690mW-700mW in a pen sized laser. When batteries are drained down to 3.7V each, current drops, and optical output as well down to about 600mW lowest!

So first, Groove 2 does not keep constant current, but depends on sources voltage, unlike micro boost.
Second, I expected 500mA max no matter what.
Third, 10440 batteries arent so bad after all! They will deliver juice for short duty cycle lasers just fine. I am using them in bursts of 2-10- seconds ON, more so because of lack of heat sink. Also, with momentary on switch, why would i need more. - ojh yeah, for pic taking, i know! Haven't done that in a long time :-)))
good things CAN come in small packages :-))

I am getting another S06J diode tomorrow from laser surplus parts store, and will be pushing it till i feel it makes no sense to push anymore. I expect to reach 1W optical power after 405-G-1 lens. then I'll worry about life span :-)

p.s.
It will be in my old Stingray 2 host with V5microboost driver for this test, not pen ;-)

cheers

That is awesome. I had been getting around a 150mW difference between the lenses so I would bet you are close to 900mW If you went with a G-1.:eg:

The groove will max out higher than 500mA but you start running into thermal issues. But you can sink the big chip on the top to handle the excess heat.

A 10440 should be able to pull 600mA no problem.

Now to see how long the diode lasts being driven at these currents. I am still waiting on a host that I plan to use and I will set one to 700mA and see how long it can last.

I installed G-1 lens and I'm getting nice 930mW with fresh batteries drawing 604mA.

It lasts only for a minute or so at this max power as these AAA lithiums are only 350mAh. and than it lasts much more at around 800-830mW !!

amazing for a little pen!

I got second diode, and will install it into my Stingray 2 host with real heat sink, and V5 flex drive, instead of this linear groove 2. It shall go to 1W - it shall have no choice. I don't plan to have long duty cycle, only 10-20sec at the time.

i just wish i had more time.

cheers
