1.5 Amp 445nm phaser build:

Shown in the July, 2011 issue of Popular Science Magazine... :D

Phaser%201.3%20Watts.jpg

I have done testing with running 2 X IMR 14500 Li-Ion's in parallel and it works great for a V5 FlexDrive set at 1.5 Amps...

It requires a few modifications:

* Re-wiring it for parallel
* Slight modification to the battery compartment
* Driver heatsink installed
* Installing voltage regulators for the sound board and the 3 volt LED 'armed' indicator LED. (7833 voltage regulators - 3.3 volts)
* Blue LED under the silver vent plate for illumination effect from inside
* Also, with this mod, the sound board is turned on with the safety switch, as well as the laser...
* Using an AixiZ 445 lens and getting 1.3 Watts... (would be 1.5 Watts with a 405-G-1)

It is wired so that the voltage to the FlexDrive, is direct from the batteries. (4.2 volts at full charge)

Note: With a little extra work to modify the battery compartment, I can fit protected AW 14500's.

The capacity will be approximately 1200mAh's (IMR 14500's - 1500mAh's for AW protected 14500's). So you must be careful not to over discharge the non-protected Li-Ion batteries. They should be around 30 to 40 minutes between charges. Check voltage once in a while. Do not let the batteries get below 3 volts.

'Hot' option??

Yes! :) See here:
http://laserpointerforums.com/f64/fs-star-trek-phaser-hot-option-individual-parts-46946.html

With a 'Hot' option kit, the heatsink for the module is installed, and glued in place. It has to be that way because I align it with the EzFocus adapter, and the nozzle of the phaser.

All you have to do, is slide your diode/AixiZ module into the heatsink and set it's position with the set screw. (you will need a 1.5mm Hex wrench)

Then just solder your diode leads, to my driver leads, and that's it...

The IMR 14500 Li-Ion batteries must be installed with both positive ends the same direction. I will have permanent marker on the battery compartment to remind you of the battery install direction.

With this build, I include the IMR 14500's. Because I need them to do the fitting, and also for the testing...

Note: With a little extra work to modify the battery compartment, I can fit protected AW 14500's.

Do not install the batteries until you get your diode connected. Because the driver can get damaged if powered without a load.

Reminder: With this build, the sound will not work until you arm the laser with the safety switch. Then the sound will work, along with the laser...

WOW Jay. That is Cool.

Cant wait to see some beam shots.

You Never disappoint me.:)

Safety switch is a a Great idea.

Another Great Build From the man himself.

Re: 1.5 Amp 445 Phaser Build...

:thanks:

I already took my diode out... (this 'Hot' option build is for a customer)

But I had to put a diode in there to test it and make sure everything was working as expected. Especially with the two voltage monitors and stuff...

It gave 1.5 Amps to the diode, and measured 1.3 Watts with an AixiZ 445 lens installed. :)

Easily popped a balloon at 15'...

Edit: I just upgraded my 12X build to match this exact build! :) I have a blue LED inside as well. I'll try to get some video and post it in the first post... (edit: just added a short video)

1.3Amps? or Watts? ... i think you mean watts
anyways looks pretty cool..
would be cool if it looked like a real gun... hmm :> :3

Hello Jay! I had a feeling that you would adapt your Phaser pistol build to 445 sometime:) Looks great, I may have to try the high power laser on a trigger routine!

Re: 1.5 Amp 445 Phaser Build...

I was impressed with the 445 power vs my 12X build. And visually, I like it better than my 140mW green build...

In fact, I just finished changing out my 12X, and modifying the build to be exactly as above. It also has an additional blue LED that illuminates the inside when the trigger is pulled... (so you see blue light coming out of the silver vent plate on top)

Just did a short video to show the beam and the blue LED light shining through the top vent plate...

Re: 1.5 Amp 445 Phaser Build...

Great job!
Especially with the light coming out the top and the sound FX!
I guess this was a re-visit just waiting to happen.:D
Now you need a switch to change between "stun" and "kill".

Nice job Jay. I love the glow effect LED I used in mine. I like the improved trigger you are using. I'll bet it has a more solid feel when you push the trigger than the tact switch style.

Yeah I actually liked the feel of that switch at first, but then the switch gave out. Not as resilient as the new tactile's that I found which have a stronger spring... (= better feel)

GAH! So cool!

EDIT: I just had a brilliant idea for this build, by the way.... What if you added a switch that added in an additional 4-5 ohms in resistance in the driver...? Then you could SET YOUR PHASERS TO STUN!!! :O
