If you have photoshop, you can use a tripod and do a generic imagestack. Basically take a series of images from the same perspective, and compile the images together and they will combine in brightness using the apply modes.

No tripod that's the problem! I'll figure something out.

What amazes me is that nobody has noted that thermal grease is a HORRIBLE conductor of heat in of itself when in large quantities. It's made to fill in minute surface imperfections between two joining parts. Generally the thinner the layer the better. I know in CPU applications, it doesn't take very thick of a layer to end up with worse thermal transfer than using NO thermal grease.

This looks like a case of WL just using some heatsink they had laying around that didn't really fit the host. Though it does explain the people complaining about the focus changing depending on how they had the laser angled though.

Mine are in fact the new ones. I JUST got these from Jayrob. Unless they sent him old ones (which I thought they sold out) :thinking: lol

There seems to be a mixed bag of the way the lenses are assembled...

I am finding both assembly styles with the proper optics. (not sure why there are different assembly types)


About the heatsinking/thermal 'glob'. Obviously the larger the heatsink mass, the better...

If you have not seen it, check out the awesome modification that laser_freak did to an older Sypder...

He has a 3 minute video showing how nice and stable it is at 1.2 Watts because of the massive heatsink:

The laser is producing 795mW with the "full power" lens
It is producing 190mW with the "low power" lens
The current draw at the battery was 1.8A

I just put my camera on a table or stool or something and put a 2 second delay so I'm not touching it when it goes off to get a blur free pic. As for keeping the laser still, you could put that on something too. It's what I do, and it works for me, quite nicely too I might add. /brag

I definitely want to see that picture!

I think I have an idea of how I'm going to take the picture! I'll get back to you guys tomorrow (I'll have to take it at night)

You can make a mount with a plastic cylinder, screws and bolts. Most tripods have a 1/4" mounting screw. Mini tripods are dirt cheap too, this one was 12 bucks.

I've got a mount for the laser, just not for the camera! And then there are angle problems, but as I said ^^^^ I think I have an idea

I gave up on the wait, but kudos for sticking it out. Even with the reviews...

Naw, I'm jk. I still think this would be a good addition to any collection, but mostly for the host. The beam specs. are a major turn-off for me. I'm hoping G2s will be better.
So, has it been determined whether or not the black piece of plastic that some have on the lens eats some of the power? That doesn't make much sense to me, if it's just a plastic ring with a hole in it. Seems like it'd be there to protect the lens more than anything. Maybe it's a preventative measure taken by WL to keep their messy grease/thermal paste job from getting on the lens. :crackup:

One guy on The WL facebook page shows a video of his on a meter and peaks at 955wm with lens cap off. Seems you need to take this off to get max power. Freezing the Crystal he gets over 1 watt.

The Arctic is a direct diode laser, doesn't use crytals, a diode pumped solid state laser uses crystals, Arctic is not a DPSS laser.

Phasers2stun, you are correct. There is no crystal in this laser.
