Another Build Failure

Well I thought I'd try another build, after all the other failures were all a couple years ago now. This was the first time I was attempting a 'full' build, without any pre built parts too. Although the end result is the same and the parts of this build will join the PS3 BluRay, and the 200mW IR in the landfill. I realized as soon as I got the parts that this build was far far above my ability, but I tried it anyway. Bad idea. lol Things went wrong almost from the start, I chipped the diode getting it out of the heat-sink and got a bunch metal dust into the end. Then it fell onto the floor as I finally got it out. It was probably already dead by then, but I decided to go on. When mounting it in the Aixiz I mangled all the pins an scraped the front again. I should have just given up then because at least I could have sold everything except the diode, but I pushed ahead and tried to attach the flexdrive. I couldn't get the solder to stick to my iron, so I had to just feed a huge blob on at once and hope it didn't roll off. Unfortunately WAY to much came off the iron and soldered the whole front of the flexdrive and all the LPC diode's pins in one giant blob (pictured below). I might be able to sell this as some kind of weird modern art, but a laser it ain't. LOL

That's a bummer man...

I hate to laugh, but man... that is a real work of art. And I think you knew it would look kind of funny when you posted it!

The part that I don't understand, is that it looks like you have the solder jumpers for the range setting soldered pretty good. And that is usually the hardest part. So I don't know how you did that part, but weren't able to solder the pins...

Hahaha, no problem if people laugh, this was posted about 50% just for it's comic value. LOL :p Nah, I got the driver preset at 375mA, it came with those already done. :p

Preset at 375mA's? Oh man... That means that this was a 12X diode?

Wow, that's definitely no laughing matter... That's a drag man...

LOOL, no! It was only an LPC-815. No way I'd ever attempt a build with anything expensive. haha

Dang Simon, that's some bad luck man. I'm sure you'll get it eventually, at least it was just an LOC instead of a 12x...still not good, but not as bad as it could have been.

First off i'd like to say.. Dont give up. Evar

I have also had a few mishaps when building, but that is all part of the game. most of the time when i messed up it was from moving to quickly or not paying attention. now before every build i do i make sure that i have all my things ready to go before i even start. I dont know what tools you have but i could NOT do without my helping hands. i modded mine to have 4 hands instead of 2. if you dont have one.. get one. they are very worth it. That and a vise. You should also remember to stay cool and calm, if its not workin from the start.. set it down and walk away for a bit. (That right there has saved me many times) you can always come back later. I think the first thing i would do if i were you though is practice soldering. just get random crap and wire it up for a bit until you are sure of your welds. One thing i could not do without is Flux. Get some. its a life saver. for me it was anyways. No matter what happened, everything is a learning experience. If you decide to go at it again.. remember what NOT to do. But the best advise i can give you is don't give up. it is so very worth it to have completed it yourself. Just take your time.
Without Fail.. There can be no Win

Nice Hi-Res picture BTW

You need the right tools for the job. Buy a good temperature controlled soldering iron and you will be amazed how much easier soldering becomes.
BTW: You just won the worst soldering job I have ever seen award.:D

Dont feel bad. My first, and only attempt, gave me a scar on my finger from where the tip, and solder landed. My hands shake normaly from my back injury, and when I'm concentrating they get worst. I'm not cut out for soldering small stuff.

I'm in the same boat as TJ. My hands shake badly from all of my back injuries & surgeries as well. If I want / need something built, I pay someone else to do it for me. I have since adopted this motto concerning soldering, "if at 1st you don't succeed, quit & pay someone else to do it" lol rob
