That "old" mod we had here once used a lot of foul, insulting language toward the members to be sure. I think the repeated insults toward the CEO of a laser manufacturer
in pictures and print is what caused the legal problem for Avery.
He is gone now -- hopefully one of a kind.
I think that there some level people on here to put out fires but hopefully these problems will be few.

Regarding the post count.... what about the noobs who have big post counts because of threads like "3 word story"? Are they to be considered knowledgable? Or members rep'd for reasons other than business transactions? (I still like the idea of rep only for $$ transactions, like ebay.)
Some vets on here seem to me to be to "righteous", and they have big post counts and high rep. Members such as Dave, Jerry, Electro, Hemlock..hell even Niko would make good mods IMO. They have been here for quite a while and seem to be pretty fair to everyone. Im sure there are many others who would make good mods... Do we get a list to pick from?

Edit: The people I listed was just an example. I know they have lives other than just LPF.. Does the mod get paid? Or is it a pro bono position?

As a Super Mod on the biggest Warez forum in the world, a team of moderators, of even an even ratio of moderators, works best for forums.

I have offered to Moderate this forum, just the ability to lock rooms will be enough. Flame war? Lock room - cooldown session. Agree to re open the room when people have calmed down.

This method works on a day to day basis at warez-bb and I want to introduce it here.

Voted Yes.

Yes, mods are needed here. I've argued this for nearly two years and they are becoming more and more needed every day. The past few weeks really show how useless "self-moderation" really is. A couple moderators that could end fights and lock noob threads asking a question that could be answered by a quick search would greatly improve this forum. The overall quality of this forum is pretty bad, sometimes I'm almost embarrassed sending bunches of people here for help because of all of the crap being posted. If this place stays a place for drama I'll get rid of all of my links to here in my Youtube stuff so I don't look an idiot for recommending a crappy site...lol.

What if someone hijacks a perfectly good thread and starts the war? Wouldn't it be better to block the flamers instead of the thread?

I must say I really disagree with rep per transaction.. this is a forum, not a company or trading post, even though it does include those.
Imagine what it would mean - someone like Tyler who has just been banned would probably have way more rep than Dave simply because Dave only sells a few things now and then while Tyler sold loads and loads of stuff. The same goes for Jake who is also banned. Several of the most rep-deserving, contributing members of this forum rarely if ever sell things.
You mention Dave, Jerry, EF, Hemlock Mike and Niko as potential moderators.. As far as I know only Jerry sells things often and because of the type of product he provides even he doesn't sell large amounts compared to some of the random cheapo laser sellers we have had.

The 3 word story thread is a thread for fun. It works well and it doesn't hurt anybody. People have got to stop worrying about "Hey, you just wrote a post with three words! You're trying to get your post count up" and start actually enjoying the forum. I come here to learn, contribute and to have fun.

In addition, the endless discussion of "Who is trustable? The one with rep or with high post count?" needs to end too. You KNOW the ones who are trusted, knowledgeable members by simply staying in this forum for two weeks or so, no need to check post counts or reputation.

Now, regarding your EDIT question: No. The mod doesn't get paid. And he shouldn't. Nor it's a pro bono position. The mod's position is covered by somebody trusted and that has the time (and a quick enough response time) to take care of things like the one we presensed last week.

Tyler and Jake also had a lot of unhappy customers.
I get your point though, and hadn't really thought about it like that. I was thinking that it proves who is trustworthy to do transactions with. Remember that potato guy? He is a good example... decent rep, crap ethics. He did make ammends in the end, granted.
Otherwise, it seems to be more of a popularity contest. Then again, donating to the forum gets rewarded with rep points too. Crap, I need to think harder before I post. Sorry. I've been trying to be more interactive lately instead of just reading.

See, Niko would make a good mod... I'm off to have fun spamming the other thread :p

I am confused Niko.. I thought posts in the Other section didn't even count towards number of posts?

Seb

EDIT: Don't worry ColdStl I can see why you would want it, I just think it would be lacking for the given reasons.
And as Niko just says - rep and post counts actually mean very little. It only take a short time here to realise who is consistently trustworthy. For example I did support Tyler (DAoO) for a long time and thought he was a good guy, but from the very beginning I had a bad feeling about him as well. Although nice and generous when I bought a CO2 gun from him, he was slightly confused and messed up the first quote on shipping prices. The package also smelt strongly of cigarettes which isn't particularly professional.. but it was a good price, it worked and he was nice. Then he started his repair and assembly business and instantly I had a gut feeling that this was going to end badly. How did he have all these building skills when he had done his first ever deal on LPF (not even for a laser) with me a few weeks before? Why was he slightly exaggerating everything he said while keeping incredibly low prices, then changing them for each customer? Somehow when all the crap about him came out I thought "well.. about time," because I had been expecting it from the start, while somehow keeping it out of my mind.

Wow that turned into a long Tyler rant. My point is basically - you get a feeling about each member's credibility very quickly. I liked Tyler but I would never ever have considered him Mod material.

Wow OK that explains how some people (including me) got so many posts these past two months..

Oh Jerry you and your "......."
If you become an anonymous mod I will be able to hear your old-man-gasping-for-air-talk miles away :na:
