Okay. The high performance short duration is acceptable. But the mode hopping is not, labby or hand held it should be able to maintain TEM00 while it is at full power. I agree that a little current turn down may be in order.

I'll edit the review to agree with the above.

@H_M...
I fully understand what you are saying... What bothers me is that
the Spec Sheet on the WL site for the Green SPYDER III says the
Duty Cycle is Continuous...

If the $3.5K Laser can only hold its rated 400mW-500mW power
for 1-3 minutes before dropping to 100mW.... then I don't consider
the Duty Cycle Continuous...

How on earth did you get that? I presume you didn't pay the thousands of dollars price tag. If reviewing how did you get chosen?

And what is WL policy on customs? If UK Customs was to seize that the purchaser would not be happy ;)

That's the best way to put it Jerry. It will probably output 100mW until the batteries die. But that isn't 100% duty cycle at or above it's rated power.

Some of the vets got chosen to review some units, I got picked for the green unit.

As far as I'm aware there are no laws regarding the importation of lasers into the UK. The laws on lasers govern their sales and use INSIDE the UK, going from what I have read anyway.

Nice fair review Diachi!

Recently I found out that expecting pure TEM00 output and full stability from a Chinese DPSS over 500mW is asking too much. The vast majority of Chinese manufaturers list ALL of their >500mW green DPSS lasers as being "near TEM00" which could mean anything.. I'm not trying to say that your unit should be unstable and drop to 100mW after a bit, but things get very different when you get into high-powered linear cavity lasers.

My RPL 375 does the flickery thing a little it starts about 500+ then as the crystals heat up it will drop to about 400 --350--475- then settle around 400 then after a few minutes lose power to around 350 but like mike said its not a lab unit and i rarely use it more than 60 seconds :lasergun:

But your RPL stays in TEM00 right?

I wonder if the TEC in this Spyder III is broken?

Nice review, Diachi. Would it be possible for you to do an outdoor, long distance, beam shot looking back at the laser? What kind of range is that laser capable of?

And, clean your room!lol

Let's hope it's jsut this particular unit. I should have a Spyder III to review shortly, will see if the results are better.

Yes... I'm getting one as well. (Spyder III Pro Green)

I will do 2 minute test runs on mine. I normally only use a 1 minute duty cycle, but will test this unit for 2 minute cycles...

Ya considering you can get an even more stable RPL or hell even a Herc for that much..... my rpl 450 is in tem 01 for 5 seconds then it's a stable tem 00 with highs as high as 581mw and lows as low as 250 when using the non adjustable cap but when using the adjustable one set at level 5 of 16 the power starts at 250 shoots up to 450 over 15 seconds goes down to 400 then up to 500 down to 450 up to 540 then starts to gradually go down to 450 and settles at 430 most of the time from the 4-6 min mark then I turn it off.
And what that laser was what 1/2 as much but yet still a more stable better performer then the spider.

Turn on 700 mW of green and you can almost feel the recoil from those photons !!!!
Try to measure divergence with that power in your face.............
