I think we should all pitch in to send Igor to meet theses suppliers...

His knowledge and diplomacy should at least show these people we are legit and serious...kinda like the hobbyist commin out of the closest.LOL (seriously)

This is similar to the way that we USED TO do it. A few of us would do a small GB and test them.

Unfortunately, as the forum grew, more and more members had ego problems that led them to wanting to be the BMOC and/or the desire to make a couple of bucks quickly. PLUS, everybody wants it NOW!!!!!!!!!

Now the Chinese have learned how to "play" us as an uneducated market. Now we are paying the price for our internal competition and impatience. As we have learned again from this sled -- one good diode does not an 8X make

Peace,
dave

oh noes!
well, good find, dave, this explains a lot I fear!

seems like in the future we should do this more organized. like only one person gets several sleds, perhaps 5, and checks them thoroughly. if they have to be paid, perhaps with a fund from members and shops here. when they turn out good, these shops and members get the sleds earlier or cheaper.
this all would form against a marked and competition. but it would perhaps avoid such desasters, which wasnt the first time.. and would strengthen the negotiating-power of such a tester with the chinese, since he is the only one, but with potentially large numbers.
but then, perhaps its still better the current way? small setbacks from time to time, but healthy competition, which brought LOC and 803 sleds to curiously low prices by the time..

Heh ..... well, as i already said, not all the members of the forum are rich in the same way, and not all them can afford the same expenses ..... so, is understandable that someone want items at good prices, if possible.

But i agree with you, daguin, about the "i want more and i want it yesterday" style (sorry, don't know how to say it in different way) that, always more and more, is rising, and not just here, also in all the other places (i'm not registered in other forums, but i lurk occasionally here and there, and see this tendence rise and rise) ..... and, ofcourse, the sellers try to take profit from this, after all, is the work of a seller, to try to take profit :p :D

Personally, i don't understand all this rush, but is just a personal feeling ..... for me, lasers are a hobby, like others, and i don't become crazy for any hobby ..... for get my first PHR's, i waited they drop under 15$, got the 6X when they dropped the prices, and still waiting from some months for put my claws :p on a decent (and effective) 8X or better ..... but, for what concern me, chinese sellers can continue to play their game for all the time they want ..... i don't become crazy for their games ..... IF and WHEN the prices become reasonable AND when i can afford them, i buy that what i want, otherwise, waiting, relaxing and looking (the patience is the only thing that i don't lack, LOL)

Notice too that the write speed of the sled above is only 2X for SINGLE layer. Now the write speed in the 8X's are still only 2X for "BD-RE", but for "BD-R" it is 8X and these speeds are for double layer.

Wait, are you saying that this is a 2x speed writer?
I have the diode requirements of 2x and 4x speed writers somewhere, and they are very low. 60 and 75mW CW or so...

I would not expect such a diode to go to 300mA without a kink....
For some reason the S03 diodes give the impression of being at least as good as the GGWs..

But i guess i'll find out soon enough.. That package is on it's way, right?

EDIT: The curious thing about it is, that the Vf never got to bizzare levels, which i would expect with a diode of a lower power rating... Even when my test diode died, the Vf was barelly over 5.5V... I usually take that as a good sign.

When i push low power diodes to high currents, the Vf goes above 6V!

The article speaks for itself. There is no doubt in my mind that the sled pictured in the article is the sled I received as an S03. It very clearly shows both the front and back side of the sled as well as the inside of the sled.

Also, my research into the Pioneer brand lately has shown me that the model designation BDR-S03 would simply be the designation for the OEM model of the BDR-203. The sleds in these two models would/should be identical. They, obviously, are not the same sleds.

The package is most definitely already on its way to you. I dropped it off at the post office on the 11th. The tracking number still shows it as "accepted" at the post office, but I am sure it is well on its way to you. I sent it in a flat-rate priority envelope (est. 6-10 days, excluding customs in your country).

If you all are going to test them you need some one with a LaserBee 1 power meter or better to get an accurate reading!
and stop pushing them with a CW driver in their PW power levels!!!!:banghead:
That's like putting NOS on a stock GEO metro.

I have both a Scientech 365 with a 360001 calorimeter AND a Scientech Vector S310 with an AC 2500 (Rev A) calorimeter. I think I'm getting pretty accurate measurements. ;)

Finding and then pushing diodes to the very limit of their potential is half the fun of this hobby.

dont worry, frosty, dave and igor know how to treat (and mistreat) those diodes.. ;-)
..which doesnt necessarily mean that the diodes will be alright ;-)

I have a 30mW Blu-Ray that when properly focused burns soft wood...

Well if we had actually gotten sleds from the S03 burner, they would have been identical to the sleds from the 203 burner. I have read enough from Pioneer now to better understand their numbering system.

I know that we all HOPE for things, but we have to remember, if the driver is still in production, no one is selling sleds for warranty work yet ;)

Also some of these sleds were showing signs of corrosion. That usually take some time to develop. If they just came off of the assembly line as QC rejects they may have been damaged, but probably not corroding yet. However, if they have been sitting around since mid 2007 . . . . . .

I hadn't even unwrapped the S03 sled I bought from kendal...
I just opened it and yes.. I've seen this type of metal corrosion
before but only after a few years in a humid/wet environment..
Some of the corrosion spots look like they were settling liquid
drying out..

Dave: Your internet searches are no doubt giving very interesting results.

But 2x speed for the "S03" is still hard to believe. I'm sure they are better than GBW 4x's and from the limited experience i had with the one diode so far (and the plots i've seen)... I get the feeling they are at least equivalent (in power rating) to GGWs or maybe the 100mW Nichia (if there is a power rating difference between the two)..

But this new info gives me better ideas as to how to test them when they get here.

I'm guessing the package should be here early next week..

Absolutely. Especially with this being an early blu-ray sled. There is really no telling what the diodes were like in them until we test them. It is just very obvious that they are not the newer diodes in the 8X sleds and that they are not the sleds from the Pioneer BDR-S03 burners.

Besides my and your first plots, I didn't think anyone else had tried anything else with these diodes but to "hit" them with 300mA or more (where they have all failed).

I, for one, am very much looking forward to the results of your tests.

P.S. I almost had you an LG 8X yesterday. Somebody came in and snaked it out from under us for a significantly higher price than my offer. :( I'll keep looking. The prices are starting to fall a bit as well. The release of the 12X should knock the pins out from under the 8X in the DIY PC market.

Well Dave I had no Idea you were so well equipped with LPM, But I should have Known!
As far as pushing them that's what makes it Expensive.
