Cool, probably 20 mw of that IR. What is the length and diameter?

Cool, probably 20 mw of that IR. What is the length and diameter?

It's 6 1/2" long and the main body is 7/8" wide.
It was listed as 200mw on the web site.

Not usually in that manner I thought. I know you can pulse them in intervals (strobe), but that doesn't create high energy pulses. Unless I am mistaken.

Pulsing at 2.5W isn't creating a high energy pulse either - you're just turning it on and off but with a higher drive current. The duty cycle and short duration of the pulses allows you to use that higher drive current without damaging the diode.

Yeah, the mechanism is different. For example, with Q-switching the gain medium is still receiving pump energy even when it isn't lasing, so it stores up that energy. When the Q-switch turns off and allows lasing to happen all of that energy is dumped in a short, high power pulse. That'd be optical "pulsing", although Q-switching is the more accurate term I'd say, seeing as you're changing the Q of the cavity, the result being pulsed output.

Of course - there are other ways to get high peak power pulses, such as flash lamp pumping, but the input power from the pump is also high peak power, thus high peak output. That'd be electrical pulsing.

I knew a little bit about q-switching because of the huge laserscope. :p
So the process that is going on inside those diodes is the same as that of the 589 DPSS pointers. Just improved duty cycles and power output. Thanks again. :) +rep for the explanation.

Yeah, same as the 589s. Actually, that's all their doing in the 589s too - pulsing the pump LD. :)

For direct injection lasers (diodes), if your objective is a higher average power, CW is the best option. Pulsing can get you higher peak powers, but the average power needs to be substantially lower.

Many DPSS processes are more efficient at higher powers, so the higher (average) power of the solid state laser component offsets the lower (average) power from the pump component in some cases.

Good point on DPSS. Certainly, non-linear optics (I.e. the SHG/SFG part we use in DPSS) are more efficient at higher powers.

Not sure if that's why certain DPSS pointers are pulsed, or if it's just for thermal management. Perhaps both.
