I have been saving this host for my first green diode and it finally happened! I am extremely happy with the build and the new Osram PL520. This is going to be a quick review just to show off my new baby :)

Heatsink was machined by mrcrouse and the focus knob made by Fiddy

I purchased the diode from DTR and I am using an X-Boost set to 340ma.

Now for some side by side comparisons to a Fasttech 532nm module.

Something people might find interesting is that the lens that gave me the best dot was the Aixiz 635nm-660nm 3-element lens. Here are the four lenses I tried.

The 405nm 3-element has horrible splash. The Red 3-element has a little splash but a clean dot. The A390 and the G2 had very little splash but seemed to create a circle surrounding the dot. I will be using the 635-650nm 3-element from now on.

From the pictures the difference in color can not be appreciated, is it much of a difference in real life.??

In the last pictures, I can see the different color pretty well. Then again I´m looking at it from the iPad3 Retina Display.

Wasn´t around when the 520nm murder fund was done, so I may missed a few facts. But afaik with the higher current, the wavelength of this color shifts quite a lot into the 532nm direction.

There seems to be a decent amount of spill as seen hitting the wooden fencelike thing in that first pic. Is this very noticeable? Any idea why this occurs?

It is not a huge difference.... but side by side it is noticeable. Beam wise for me they almost look the same but the dots are what appear more different.

Yes there was. I initially was using the 405nm 3-element which is what was used in that picture. It really was bugging me so I tried all the lenses I had and the 650nm 3-element seemed to clean it up nicely. I updated the OP with pictures of each lens. From my understanding this Bat-Wing splash effect occurs when the light reflects of the inside of the lens holder due to the light from the diode diverging, this happens alot when running diodes at higher currents. I have had a couple m140's that had it really bad and I looked into it and that is what I learned :beer:

I love how stable this build is though, came out really well. Ill be making the very same build shortly, hope I can get as much power as you did!

Whats the heat buildup like on this / estimated runtime?

I was very surprised how stable it was. With the host bring ss I was not sure how good run times would be but it I'd not an issue. It is only being driven at 350ma at most..... Compared to what we have all been building that is nothing! Run time for me is 2 min Max just to be safe but it Is just a little warm then ;)

Cool, didnt know if the diode started getting hot alot once its over its usual 200mA current. Im probably going for 350 mA as well.

I have mine set at 340ma just to be on the safe side. Didn't want to kill it right away ;)

Exccellent build and review thread! +1 for certain!

I am so jealous with the 520nm builds coming out! My diode is @ 300mA for safety and my MS-SSW arrives this week!

Looks like you got a good diode too :D 140mW from 340mA is great!
