Selling etiquette and "host ownership"

If you ask for their permission to sell something privately via PM, and they give you their thumbs-up, then why wouldn't it be fair??

More to the point -

I am almost certain that if you had originally approached this by contacting the other member to explain the situation and ask for their permission to privately sell it (under the understanding that you had made an error in not realizing that they were selling the host themselves, and that you weren't planning to sell more of them afterward) you would have received a warm response.

I know this, because this kind of open courteous interaction does happen, and slack is cut.

But it probably won't happen to you, if you take the approach of saying things like:
"I have this host I wanna sell and you say it is one of your signature hosts, but dude you have like an unlimited number of signature hosts and I disagree. I still like and respect you buddy but I'm going to go against you on this one."

Nobody is going to warm to that. Nobody is going to show sympathy / cut slack, if you're not respecting courtesy yourself up front.

I just read all the post since my last post...

I feel some of you have got the idea.

1) if a seller is selling a unique "signature" or other Laser
as a regularly available item then I see no problem building
one (1) copy for your own use and even selling it at a
point in time.

2) if a seller is selling a unique "signature" or other Laser
as a regularly available item then I would see a problem
copying that build for sale as another regular available
item.
Since tsteele93 stated that he want to do it for fun..
I can't see any fun for the original builder/seller to have
his unique "signature" or other Laser design being copied
and sold at cost by the 2nd seller. There is no respect
there.... business wise or Forum wise.

2) If a seller only sells one unique "signature" or other
Laser and intends to never sell another then I can't
see a problem of selling a similar regular item (one or
more) since the original one is not being reproduced by
the original builder.
( I would still ask for an OK from the 1st builder)

I see no problem of any member here building a one off
or a production Laser for himself.

I would have a problem with a member that blatantly
wants to compete with an established selling member
unless his similar build was an obvious improvement...

Iam Just going to lay it all out on the table. AS it appears that he thinks iam the only one that feels this Way. Iam done with all the side stepping and he thinks Iam the Only one that fallows this rule because the other 2 sellers that posted and some of the members was NOT as Clear with saying they fallow this Respect thing or agree with how things are now or you just dont want to hear it.

PLEASE NOTE JUST BECAUSE A BUILD IS SOLD DOES NOT MEAN IT DOES NOT CONTINUE TO SELL. In fact i sold one last night. IF you are a respected meember and want proof i will gladly show it to you.

Iam 99% sure he new prior to ordering the host that i did the stainless build and the big black ones. I Promise you if i can find his post i will post it. But i cant remember where i seen it at the momment.

For the Longest time This was Never a Problem because We all respected each other. I never sold a Single Host that RHD has sold on the open forum and or he has never sold on the open forum a host that I have sold. With Jay I also Have never sold any of his Kits or heatsinks that he sells Same as Jeff and they have never sold anything i have. I can Also Add Wolf to this as He is also great and Respect this Now too.
There is Exception though.

We as a Group all Agree to this with some Exceptions.

Also They have sent many people my way that has asked them for something i make for them to do. They all refused and sent them to me fallowed by a PM from them showing me what they did.. That is the up most respect you can do. I do the same for all of them as well when some contact me for a C3 heatsink i send the over to Jay even though i can ,make the heatsink myself i still send them back over to Jay out of courtesy and respect. etc etc. Its the way WE all Agree on it should be done and Has been done since the beginning.


For the 100th time I am NOT the Only One that Feels this Way. Get that out of your Head. If you cant Read between the lines^^^^^ and only read the Sugar coated stuff then i dont know what to tell you. Some People might not come out and Flat out say it. However They feel the same way i do and if you attempted to do the same thing to them they would be on the same page as me.

Speak up guys. Really. I feel he thinks iam the only one among us sellers that feel this way. Maybe its not clear enough for him and he is just targeting me.

We have all gotten along for this. Only recent have i been slammed by new Members that want to build in host that i sell and still sell to this day. In fact I just Sold One of these Last Night. "If you are a respected Member I will show you the proof" If you need it.

Iam tired of New Members like you that think they can come here and change the way things have been running smoothly. They want to change things that have been in place since the forum Started. LONG BEFORE i was here. When I started to sell it was the first thing that was ASKED not TOLD if i can do. I Understand fully where they where coming from and from that point on i did my own thing. This is what makes everyone Unique and have there own style.



You have been here for 3 months and already want to sell and go against this unwritten rule among sellers.

You have been here for 3 months and are already at 861 post and 9 posts a day. This is Quit alot for 3 months.

You have opened 70 threads that is More then Half of the amount that i have opened and have been here for more then 1 1/2 year to say the least.

Iam not even going to describe the type of threads most of them you opened.

Ive never had to explain and explain and explain how this works so many times before. This is going on the 3rd time in 1 month and even another member that can speak up if they want to has also gone through the same stuff that i have been in the past month . Further more and further back it was even worse done to other respected sellers.

You have been running around this forum like you run the place. Iam not the only one that thinks this. You would be surprised how many more have said this but will not call anyone out. Your Talking like you know more then any other person on this forum. Your trying to change something that 5-6 sellers agree on and has never been a problem.

I could care less if you sold a laser cheaper then me. Really people by my stuff because they know what they are getting and the support i give. We always welcome new Sellers we need more sellers However most of the time those sellers are doing there own thing not what has been done by someone else and is still being done by someone else today and becomes very Respectable. You will not get good attention with your attitude on this forum.

I have proven my respect to the other sellers and they have proven it back to me. Even to members I have have proven respect to as they show me.

Iam probably one of the nicest guys on the forum. Ask anyone Ive dealt with. Ive Given away so much free stuff i have spent Hours upon hours helping New members Put builds together I have shard Discounts on Items I have ran Groupbuys I have posted Tutorials i have posted Reviews and the list goes on.

You are the Only one that feels Negative toward me. I wonder why. The whole forum is Very Nice to me and 1 person that seems to give me a hard time. Hmmm who seems to be the problem here.

That's the distinction I would make too. I don't consider these pre-made hosts from China used in "signature builds" akin to trade secrets or patents, where someone has exclusive access to it. Having short-term exclusive access to an idea is the purpose of patents, but in this context, I don't know if it is really valid. In Jayrob's case, what was ripped off was the heatsink Jayrob developed, not the host, and the goal was to undercut Jayrob's business with a direct rip-off.

I also don't like the idea that people have "monopolies" on specific hosts or designs. Competition fosters innovation and better prices in the long run. I think we'd all be seeking out alternatives--LPF courtesy or not--if the prices were too high for a specific product. Imagine if we allowed only certain individuals to sell 445nm diodes at high prices because they "discovered" it first. Do we sit back and let Wicked Lasers have exclusive access to the "Arctic" host?

In the same line of thought, competition is good for "signature builds." It keeps prices low, and makes people want to do more with the builds. Plus, if the build is actually "signature" it needs to do more than just utilize some host from China. If you're just putting a basic pill into a host it's not really that "signature" is it?

So my thought is this: unless you're blatantly ripping off someone's build to undercut business, it's open season. I think we'll all be better for it.

Maybe you can just sell the hosts to lazeerer??

I once bought 10 cool little AAA stainless hosts to make a new kit thread...

I was bummed when I saw that wannaburn already had the host that he sells builds for...

I contacted him, and asked if it was ok to just do the 10 kits - or could I sell him the hosts for what I paid plus shipping.

He took to offer to sell him the hosts...

Honestly Jay If its the Money Ill give him the Money. I dont even want the host from Him. He can keep the Money and the Host.

Its More to that and appears this member has taken it further .

I have eaten over 1 thousand dollars in host. So its far from that. Its Just an Excuse for him.

These are Nearly 100$ hosts we are talking here not 20$ host.

These Are Pretty Much Custom Hosts If you ask me. Up until i started to post them no one posted anything from this Site Except 1 other member that i will not mention but iam sure you know who iam speaking of.

We both shopped at this store and never crossed paths. EVER.!

So again its more to that. I dont think its the money.

Now you are accusing me of lying. I have not lied. We are talking about TWO HOSTS. If I was going to try and copy your line of lasers why would it be two hosts.

As I said in my initial post to you on March 22 which you did not respond to until today when you saw this thread, I bought two of the black hosts and one of the stainless that turned out to be something you are selling.

I explained that I was going to build the stainless as a personal build, but that I had planned on selling ONE of the black ones.

I wanted to sell ONE host that was the same as yours because I had already bought it. I will provide the PM to anyone who would like to see it.

What you call respect, I call protectionism. I absolutely agree it would be wrong of me to stalk your builds, or copy your designs. But my buying a couple of hosts that you happen to build and wanting to sell ONE of them is hardly an issue of respect. It is an issue of control.

Angelos, I asked you if I could sell ONE of "your" hosts. PLEASE re-read my initial PM and see what I said. Heck, here - I will quote my PM here - tell anyone if I am not posting it exactly.

LOL, I have a degree in Engineering Physics with a minor in mathematics and I have to wait a year to sell a laser because you say so? What is necessary for one person isn't the way everyone has to do it.

You dont want to listen to me or the others sellers. You want to run your month to wards me and Continue to cause problems.

You Caused Problems with me in my last sale thread when all this started. You Intentionally did this.

@tsteele93 - You should really take Angelos up on his offer to buy the hosts, and drop it.

Call it protectionism if you want, but that doesn't change what HE contributed to the forum and what YOU contributed to the forum.

Until you are in some way on equal footing in this regard, you should respect his request not to sell in that host.

No one cares if you make lasers for your own private collection.

Just don't sell one in the same hosts that other builders on here do, if they care about it. You asked, he said no. End of story. Move on.

Btw HE IS one of the nicest guys you'll ever deal with.

@Angelos - Feel better and don't worry about this. I know you're not the type to stake out claim on all hosts (lol) for some kind of monopoly, and how much you go out of your way to help others, and to not step on anyone's toes.

I'm going to step back from this. Enough has been said. My stance is the same as it has been for about 40 posts back. I will not sell this host. I will try to never sell another member's host if possible, but if I accidentally do - oh well.
